Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Earthworm Jim series, MDK 1&2, Freespace 1&2, Die by the Sword, and more Interplay classics 50% off!

When a conversation between gamers comes down to listing the absolutely essential PC classics one can't simply imagine the gaming world without, inevitably Interplay games come up. Most PC gamers are dedicated Interplay fans, even if unknowingly. Even if by some strange twist of life you don't instantly recognize the label, it's an easy bet that looking at our this week's [url=http://www.gog.com/promo/interplay_weekend_promo_280314]Interplay Irresistibles promo page you'll immediately notice at least two or three titles that will make you excited or nostalgic. The number of unforgettable classics in Interplay's offer here on GOG.com is simply astounding. Today, we bring you all of them with a 50% discount. Let's give our users the chance to talk about some of their favorites!

"My most indelible impression of playing Giants: Citizen Kabuto for the first time all those years ago was of just how FUN it all was. A great sense of humour (British, naturally) coupled with gorgeous graphics, lively characters, a host of play styles and topped off with THE best creature-stomp levels ever presented in gaming."--says our user GTLC in his review of the game.

I have never played a better "sword fighting" game than Die By The Sword. While the controls take a while to get used to, THEY MAKE SENSE! Being able to control your swings, where they go, how fast, being able to do feints, targeted shots, block, ripostes, etc. What other game gives you that type of control?--asks Shnar in his review of the title he calls the Most realistic sword fighting game EVER!

Besides the offbeat humor and the entertaining variety of the gameplay, MDK has one major thing going for it: presentation. This decade-old game holds up rather well thanks to some inspired level design and art direction. The colors really pop out; the game is dark, but isn't afraid to throw in vivid reds and oranges amidst the browns, blacks and grays. The dated graphics inadvertently give an otherworldly quality to the world's architecture. It's true that the assets are blocky, yet manage to be discernible and even look futuristic somehow. There are some seriously awesome textures here that are meant to disorient the player and try to turn genre conventions upside-down. The game is a joy to look at, listen to, and play[...]--says Chad praising the game's "unreal art direction".

That's only a small part of our weekend offer. Head out to our Interplay Irresistibles promo page and grab yourself some of the best games ever made for the PC, 50% off on GOG.com. The offer lasts until Tuesday, April 1, at 3:59AM GMT.

awalterj: These 50% sales are a bit difficult for me, there aren't really any games that I want at a 50% discount but there are quite a few I'd pick up within seconds if they were discounted at 70%. This sounds like a spoiled thing to say but it's just how my purchase behavior has changed over the decades.

It's funny, I remember being on the fence about Stonekeep when it was released, turning the box in my hands and marveling at the screenshots printed on the back but at a price of about 90 USD I wasn't sure if it was worth the risk. The reviews then were divided as they are today, a love or hate it kinda game.
Now the game is on sale for a laughable $2.99 and I'm still unsure whether to get this or not. Most likely, I won't buy anything.

I don't know whether discount percentages are even in the hands of GOG so not sure if posting that I'd buy more games and ultimately spend more money at 70% discounted sales will even be heard and taken into account for future sales, at all. But I'll throw it out there anyway.
Agreed. I'd be way more interested in getting both Descents if the discount was higher or if Interplay hadn't jacked the prices in order to milk more money. So I guess this weekend I won't open my wallet after all.

Regarding Stonekeep I bought it boxed some 15 years ago and I can tell you it is pretty good. It is not bugfree and one particular decision they did about inventory handling is sorta annoying but the rest of the interface is pretty good to deal with, it has the most immersive atmosphere I can think of and you can easily find your way on the automap so you're not likely to get stuck. Combat doesn't hold any supreme innovation but it is decent. One last bad thing to say about it is that the ending is rather disappointing. It seems like they ran out of money and had to rush the game out so they never did an ending video like they have in the (awesome) intro.
My opinion is that it is well worth those 3 bucks and more (not 90 USD tho. Were those guys insane?)

There are a few games i want in this promo but for now i just bought Die by the Sword. Couldn't bring myself to buy Sacrifice yet. :D
I'd really like to see Forsaken on GoG. I still own the disc but I can't seem to get it running on Windows 7 64-bit :(

Impaler26: i just bought Die by the Sword.
SPOILER:

When you get to the little guy hanging over the fire, cut him down, don't kill him. A lot of people complain about how hard this game is and I think this is one of the reasons why. :D

You just made Licurg angry/sad :P

fronzelneekburm: It's safe to say that the Star Trek games are the most sorely missed.
Not so sure about that... there are many I am sure who want the Forgotten Realms Archives more than anything (or at least a particular game it contains).

Edited to add question:

A question to my fellow GOGers that have played both Stronghold and Castles: If I already have Stronghold, do you feel I should pick up Castles? In other words, is Stronghold just a modern/better version of Castles, or would I still be missing out?

LOL yeah, it's kinda hard to complete the quest portion of the game if you amputate Enric's feet...
It's hard to complete it either way but one thing that greatly helps is to use the VSIM mouse control only for dueling in the pit and regular keyboard controls for beating the quest part. Standard sword attacks will do fine, no crazy mouse swings necessary for completing the game.

The pit duels (especially multiplayer) are where the fun is at though, worth getting the game for that alone. The quest part isn't really interesting, nice & cozy claustrophobic atmosphere but many other games offer that with better controls (Tomb Raider). Still way better than Deathtrap Dungeon though.
Can highly recommend this game to anyone even if all you want to do is cutting off each other's legs in the pit (and roast the rest in liquid lava).

The little dude being cooked up by the Orcs. Cut him loose! :D

WhoKnowscs: I own all the games so nothing this time.

When a big deal was made about GOG increasing the price on several of the games(this isn't about that), they made a big deal that they had 4 new Interplay titles coming to GOG. Well, we got Screamer 2 and about 6 months later we got Subwar 2050. It's nearing a year and a half since then so . . . where are the last 2 titles?
I second this question.

Thanks for the input! I've got 3 more days to ponder about this potential $2.99 investment, I'm not quite as afraid about wasting money, more worried about not liking the game and having another corpse on my GOG shelf. I didn't like Eye of the Beholder (not even EoB 2) but I loved Lands of Lore and I feel Stonekeep is more like the Eye of the Beholder series. Might be mistaken though.

Stonekeep, the Castles bundle or Freespace 1, this sale it's only gonna be one game if any.

Tough decision...

(don't have a joystick anymore, otherwise I'd have Freespace already)

I can't play Freespace with anything but a mouse+keyboard and it's one of my favorite games. Of course it should also be mentioned that I still live with my parents and I thought the 1st Resident Evil movie was good, so take all of these things into account.

thought it would be more entertaining if I referred to you referring to the part where you have to cut yourself down because A) Enric isn't exactly little and B) the game is sort of over if you don't cut yourself down in time. Or you could kill the guard and hang in there forever, that would be lotsa fun too!
Oh WOW! An Interplay sale! Too bad I own every game on the list ;)

That was helpful info, I decided to buy Freespace 1 now (2 being too expensive) and worry about buying Stonekeep vs Castles later this weekend.

PS: I wanted to play the tough guy who refrains from buying anything this sale because sale percentage = not good enough but it looks like I failed. Again. I'm such a typical GOG user.

I can talk for Giant Citizen Kabuto, Redneck Rampage, Kingpin, Earthworm Jim and MDK 2. They're all must buys. They're all very funny games, unflawed by time and technology...

... and still very innovatives nowadays.

They all are worth the half price they're sold.
