Miasmata, the Geneforge Saga, Hotline Miami, and more up to 85% off!

Indie games are always throwing something interesting into the mixed bag that is gaming. Untried concepts that would seem like a risk to the big AAA publishers (whose games tend to have budgets that require scientific notation) are brought to life. Concepts such as [url=http://www.gog.com/game/the_real_texas]an alternative version of Texas, or an 8-bit open world romp through the video game memories of yesteryear have all been brought to us by indie games with all the attention to detail and love of the craft that an indie developer can provide.

Let's check out what we we've got in our own trail mix of indies in the IndieMix Promo!

Are you an explorer? Does the thought of making your own map using triangulation, yes, actual triangulation!, get you all excited? Then book a ticket to Miasmata for only $2.99! After being stranded on an unknown island, you must search the island for the cure to your own illness. Be careful as you are not alone!

Some RPGs will have you rolling your party for hours on end before you can even set one foot out the door. While that can be fun, sometimes it's easier to create party members on the fly, so to speak. Create your own party members using your very will--a single hulking behemoth or a herd of rapid-sting scorpions--in the world of Geneforge 1-5 Yours for only $3.74!

Fiending for a bit of the old ultra-violence? Are you done with being the nice guy, the so-called Chosen One, and saving princesses? Yeah, so are we! That's why we took a drive down to the Sunshine State and signed Hotline Miami for those of you who cried out "No more Mr. Nice Guy!" Snatch it now for $2.49!

This was just a taste of what's in store for you in our weekend promo! We have so many other interesting indies in our trail mix or, rather, IndieMix Promo until Tuesday, May 13th, at 3:59 AM GMT!
Thoughts on stuff I played:

Hotline Miami - GOTY 2012 for me. Fantastic frantic action, challenging-but-fair difficulty, and the best soundtrack ever in a game add up to be an amazing package.

Machinarium - Wonderful wonderful adventure game. Some of the puzzles are hard, but once you figure it out, you realize how logical they are. This might be the pinnacle of P&C adventures that I've played, gameplay-wise. (Amanita Design's Botanicula is fantastic at this too.)

To the Moon - Most disappointing GOG.com purchase.

Spacechem - Utterly brilliant. It looks very chemistry-ish, but it's not. It's really a puzzle/logic game, with freedom of solutions. That's entertaining and rewarding in of itself. What makes it extra fun is challenging yourself for a more efficient solution!

Impaler26: On a side note i have exactly 200 games on GOG now and with that there aren't too many games i must have on GOG left. Time to finally play more games and stop buying games i'm only halfway interested in. :D
avatar
IwubCheeze: Sounds like you have a crazy backlog :P
Yep, i also have ~600 games on Steam, ~390 games on Desura and a whole bunch of games from other stores and on CD/DVD. I'm drowning in games and it's about time i play through at least a few of them. :D

Impaler26: Nice Promo! I already have most of the games on Steam but might pick up the 3 games from this promo i don't have yet.

phaolo: LOL Impaler, I'll be at 200 or 201 too!
Depends if I'll buy both Machinarium and Unmechanical (any opinion on this?)
Ha, i reached 200 first! :P

Machinarium is awesome, i love the art style and it doesn't use words - just symbols which represent the thoughts of the characters. That's a unique approach for an adventure and it's fun to play so it's well worth $1.99.

I only played Unmechanical briefly as it runs too slow on my old PC but it looks like a nice game. I hope someone who played the game some more can give you a better opinion on it.

Once again Valdis Story: Abyssal City averts discount.
Gotta love these weekends sales. Thanks GOG!

Anodyne and Evoland look very interesting... I love throwback games like that. I just hope they are well done.

I've seen a lot of To the Moon bashing, so let me say that I loved the game. It's not for everyone, I concede. But I thought the story was well done, and one character in particular I connected with in a powerful way. I like the music, and how it was used in the story. Most of the negative reviews I've seen were from people who had heard gushing reviews and were disappointed. Don't go in expecting a mind-blowing experience, but it's a good tale. If you're on the fence, 80% off is a perfect chance to try it out.

what a good game :)
yay finally got my DROD games

Reever: Can anyone recommend Machinarium? Especially for adventure noobs? Looks interesting!
avatar
PixelBoy: One can't possibly recommend Machinarium enough.

As for noobs, it's probably OK mostly. Puzzles are logical and the interface is easy to use.
There are one or two puzzles which may be annnoying, even for more experienced adventurers, but you don't have any pixel hunting, "magically" appearing items, talk to person A five times, etc. kind of puzzles, which might be a bit difficult for noobs usually.
Okay, thanks, then I might get this. I have other adventure games, but I haven't played any yet, lol.
But this one's - as I said - really interesting and dirt cheap too, so I think I'll just buy it now :)

I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. The talented people at Amanita Design have a way of telling endearing stories with minimal-to-none dialog, beautiful hand-drawn art styles and rewarding, logical puzzles. It's a very beautiful story about friendship, and you'll get to laugh, feel sad, meet interesting characters and enjoy a very unique world along the way. The game is very newcomer-friendly, there are two or three puzzles that may challenge your patience, but the game comes with a very nifty hint system that lets you play a mini-game to unlock the hints -- you play a side-scrolling horizontal shooter in which you must lead a key to a keyhole, it's very funny and plays relatively well. Whenever you get stuck, at least you don't feel cheap for using hints, as they make you work for it.

I highly recommend Machinarium, it's one of the best point and click adventure games I've ever played, and this comes from someone who grew up playing and loving point and clickers.

Nice promo!

Will grab To the Moon and Evoland, they've been sitting on my wishlist for ages. Will probably also get Unmechanical, though am still on the fence about it.

I have no idea as to what you would think of "well done", but Evoland had me remembering playing Zelda, Final Fantasy and even the early Gameboy adventure games whilst I was playing it. I think it was easily worth the $10 I spent on it when it came here. 4 / 5
(Looses 0.5 for making me sit through loading screens when pretending to be FF7)

Thanks - When I said well done, I just meant games that are fun for what they are.

I tried out both games, Anodyne seems to be the far better game between the two. As you have said, it's like a throwback to classic Zelda. Evoland on the other-hand is a strange mish-mash of different games and overdone references, without actually being a good game on it's own.

Ghorpm: I had a lot of fun with this game. Whoever designed movement in this game did an awesome job! You can walk, jump, use your jetpack or hook, wall jump... and everything is perfectly responding so exploring an alien world (I really like the art style) was very entertaining.

My biggest complain was stupid AI - you can kill many enemies from the distance and they won't even bother coming closer to you to return fire.

But fighting was pretty good nonetheless, a lot different weapons, some of them better for specific enemies but you can stick with one or two of them, become very proficient and then wreak havoc :) It still won't be easy, some enemies are really challenging but beating them is very rewarding.

I wholeheartedly recommend it!

grimgroove: I had the complete opposite experience. I thought the controls were very clunky and the little guy only very rarely did what I wanted him to do. I put it down after two missions.
That's interesting... I wonder why our experiences differ significantly... Liking/not liking a game is a matter of taste but opinions about things like controls and camera tend to be more objective... we have a mystery to solve ;)

Side note: I've decided to try DROD :)

Like don't starve that game is a lot more recent than most of the other games in the promo - dev probably feels game doesn't need a sale right now? pretty good game by the way ( backed it on KS)

You can finish it in one sitting, maybe two or three hours.
