Theme Hospital, Wing Commander & Privateer series, and many more EA classics 60% off

Making games is more than just craftsmanship. Game development often goes into the realm of arts. Not just, any kind of arts, mind you. Certainly not the unplugged kind. Nope. The electronic kind. If that's not a good reason to call your game developing and publishing company Electronic Arts, then I don't know what is. Founded 30 years ago, EA is now one of the world's biggest supplier of computer games and nothing short of a gaming industry giant. As such, it offers an unimaginable variety of titles from every, and any, possible genre. This weekend a Elite EA Assembly of games is available 60% off on GOG.com. Let's take a look at some of the games that put the "A" in EA!

Richard Gariott's Ultima remains an icon of computer RPGs, and many gamers consider Ultima 7 to be the best entry in the entire series. Our Complete Edition includes all four chapters of the game--The Black Gate, Forge of Virtue, Serpent Isle and The Silver Seed--in one handy DRM-free package. Become the virtuous Avatar, the savior of Britannia, to discover the origin of many strange occurrences spreading across the land and to stop the mysterious malicious entity, known as the Guardian, from pushing the world into its doom. With countless hours of deep and satisfying gameplay, this one is a must for all the RPG fans! There's no reason to stop at lucky number seven, though. The whole Ultima series--including the groundbreaking 3D dungeon crawler: Ultima Underworld 1+2--is on promo, so you can experience every single adventure of the Avatar (formerly know as "the Stranger") 60% off!

What Ultima is to RPGs, the Wing Commander series is to the space sim genre. Follow the story of the war between Terrans and the feline menace Kilrathi in Wing Commander 1+2 and Wing Commander 3: Heart of Tiger, then once the world is over and a shaky allience is formed with the cat-like aliens, face new enemies threatening the Confederation in Wing Commander 4: The Price of Freedom. The 3rd and 4th installments of the series use full motion video cutscenes to tell its elaborate stories and feature big names such as Mark Hamill, Malcolm MacDowell, and John Rhys-Davies as the Wing Commander universe prominent characters. You can also choose your own fate and pursue your goals as a mercenary, a trader, or even a space pirate in the series' popular open-ended spin-off, Wing Commander: Privateer.

Not a space-sim or RPG fan? More of an armchair general? Not a problem! Thare's plenty of trategic/managarial games in our Elite EA Assembly, as well! is the original "god game", giving you the ability to shape the world and the fates of its inhabitants in a multi-layered strategic gameplay. [url=http://www.gog.com/game/syndicate]Syndicate does pretty much the same thing, using the means of brutal corporate rivalry, cyber-implant technology, and espionage in a dark, dystopian future. Theme Hospital puts you in charge of a high-profile medical facility, making you--once again--the master of life and death. Finally, Sim City 2000 SE makes you the mayor of an aspiring virtual town, that whishes to develop into a metropoly.

That's just a small sample of the selection of over 40 classics available in our Elite EA Assembly weekend promo. Head out to the promo page to pick your favoritres 60% off, until Tuesday, April 22, at 3:59AM GMT.
Wow, Battle of Games + Weekend promo? Cool!
(even if I already own about 80% of this)

Ok, any comments and suggestions about these?
- Crusader: No Regret --> better than the other one?
- Bioforge --> is this a classic or just a badly flawed original old title?
- Starflight1+2 --> seems good, is it worth?
- Strike Commander --> pretty old flight sim.. how's the gameplay? (and controls)

Regarding crusader no regret. The controls are a lot more responsive and you don't have to be concerned about weapon loadout (you can carry your full arsenal of weapons at once) but it's also a harder game. Remember in the first game when certain enemies could one shot kill you later in the game? You meet those types of enemies much earlier in no regret. Important stuff (keycards, switches) are also much more cleverly hidden this time around. Those are the main differences but it's safe to assume if you enjoyed the first, you will enjoy this one assuming the points I mentioned above don't bother you.
Nice promo, a lot of great classic games. While I'm on-record as being unfavourable towards EA for their heavy-handed DRM and general consumer non-friendly behaviour and decision making in general and I personally boycott their games, like anything on GOG.com - I make an exception for companies that have products here. I feel that even if I have a good bone to pick with a company for being consumer non-friendly and having had bad experiences with them in the past, that if they do end up making some decisions that are consumer-friendly and in my interests even on a small scale that I should recognize them for that, even if I don't know what their specific motives might be.

Having said that, I just looked through the EA promo and am happy to announce to EA Games that I currently own 35 of the 46 EA games that are on sale right now, having bought them solely because they are DRM-free and available to me under consumer-friendly favourable conditions on GOG.com over time. I'm only one voice that alone might not matter on their bottom line, but I know many others share some or all of my views who are customers of this or other DRM-free sites and I wanted to take a moment to thank EA Games for bringing the games to GOG.com that are here and encourage them to try to bring as many more of their titles as possible and embrace DRM-free gaming across the board. We're your potential customers, we are not the enemy! Please treat us with dignity and respect and provide us with a good DRM-free product and good service and customer experience, and you'll be rewarded with our money even if we've had bad experiences with you in the past.

I'm not sure if I'll be buying anything in this particular sale as I think the 35 out of 46 games on sale in the promo are all of the EA games from GOG that I actually want, but I will definitely buy more DRM-free EA games that show up in the future if I like the game and think it's a good all around deal.

EA Games: Note that all of these games are almost certainly on pirate websites where people can download them for free presumably (I've not looked but I'd be shocked if they weren't), and myself and many others go ahead and buy them right here anyway and don't bother with the pirate route because we actually want to buy and own these games if we have a way to do so that is convenient and gives us the wonderful customer experience we so crave. I do so out of no sense of moral or ethical rationale but because I find it convenient to buy them here from GOG and enjoy the experience enough that what I get in value from GOG exceeds the money I give in return. There are so many more EA titles that I'd have loved to have owned over time since 2007 when I stopped buying your games due to bad experiences. Please bring them to GOG DRM-free and put the past behind us! I can make you a big list of titles I'd buy for certain if they show up here if it would help you with the selection process. ;o)

Ubisoft: If you're reading, then you too!
Nice promo, I already have all the games I'm interested then my wallet is safe for today
Excellent weekend promo, many great EA games at a nice looking price!
Gah! This sale is like putting my wishlist on sale! It's cruel, after a week of daily sales. No rest for the weary wallet. At least I have a few days to think it over and convince myself that 60% off is not enough of a discount to justify a wild spending spree.
Thanks for the big honkin' sale! Soooo many great titles here.
Hmm looks like I have pretty much everything I want from this promo already except for the second and third Kyrandia titles. I didn't really enjoy the first one, are the sequels better?
Bought Nox, how does it stack up as a Diablo clone?

Nox is not a Diablo clone. End of story.

(OK, I'm just being overly protective because it is one of my favorite games ever, but, still... Nox began development in 95-96 -- the time the first Diablo came out. It got released shortly before Diablo II and almost no one bought it because everyone thought it was "just a freaking Diablo clone". Nox is so much more than that, Diablo doesn't hold a candle to it.)

Just go play it, it's awesome! :-D I'd recommend a Conjurer for your first play through, there's nothing quite like it, charming ogre ladies and having an army of two of them doing the melee fighting for you. ;)

Also, if you have GameRanger, be sure to try Nox's online modes. They're lots of fun.
Come on EA! Release more games here so I don't have to stare at "you own everything" during these promos. Bring us Cybermage!
