Arcanum, Gabriel Knight, Zeus+Poseidon, Quest for Glory 1-5, and 27 other Activision games 60% off!

As the weekend draws near, it's time to reveal the next exciting promo on GOG.com. Behold the [url=http://www.gog.com/en/promo/activision_weekend_promo_05_10_12/]Activision Greats, a superb collection of 31 memorable titles. Oh, wait... that's wrong. What I meant was: 31 game boxes. Some of them contain more than just one game, so the actual number of Activision Greats amounts to impressive 54 titles! And you can get them all 60% off until Tuesday Ocober 9 at 3:59 AM GMT. Let's take a peek into some of the boxes!

Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magic Obscura summons the spirit of Fallout into a unique world where steampunk meets fantasy in a creative mixture of imagination and pure isometric RPG awesomness. In Arcanum, you get the absolute freedom to create any kind of character you want and pursue whatever quest you find the most fitting. If you're looking for a game that will drain dozens of hours of your free time--here's your best pick!

Gabriel Knight, a tormented young writter, came to be a celebrity of the point-and-click adventure genre. The first game he stars in--subtitled "Sins of the Fathers"--features beautiful pixel-art graphics, over 7000 lines of fully-voiced dialogs, and a dark story balancing on the verge of madness and occult. The game launched a successful and recognizable series that earned its place in the adventure games' hall of fame. Be sure to check the other two games that complete the trillogy: Gabriel Knight2: The Beast Within and Gabriel Knight 3: Blood of the Sacred, Blood of the Damned.

Quest for Glory 1-5 is an amazing collection of Sierra's innovative action-RPGs. Each of the five games can be played as a whole but you can also treat the series as one big adventure, as the character and his accumulated wealth can carry on from one game into another. Become a mage, a thief, or a knight and explore the five huge worlds, each based on a different culture and mythology, from Germanic fairy tales, through Arabian and Slavic folklore, right down to Greek myths. Experience the game that set many standards in the "new school" of computer RPG.

Those excellent games are but a tip of the iceberg of Activision awesomeness. There are dozens of other fantastic titles you can grab 60% off, so head out to Activision Greats promo page and go nuts!
I love Activision that on GOG.

mkell_226: Speaking of Activision, why the heck don't we have Battlezone and Heavy Gear 2 yet?!??
You can get Battlezone here. I guess it's legal; not entirely sure. It has been out in the open for a few years now, so I guess Activision doesn't mind. *shrug*

F5inator: ...
Interesting. How's the music? :)

tfishell: Interesting. How's the music? :)
Ugh, the .exe file turns into a pack of >400 MB .wav files, which I convert to .mp3, turning into ~128 MB. Then I found out, while organizing the tracks, that the bonus track isn't here. Great.

Oh wait, you mean quality of the music.

The majority of the tracks are performed by a string quartet, up until the last few tracks that feel like listening to a void in the ground. Though I prefer my music with a quicker tempo, these remind me of taking a quiet ride, like a train to Syberia.

That reminds me, I still have to play Arcanum. But with my backlog, don't think that's happening too soon.

Ha ha, sorry mate. I don't have any control over what's there, I'm just the messenger. Sorry if you missed this, but they do provide other versions of the music here: http://terra-arcanum.com/downloads/ > Arcanum > Soundtrack (Probably would have saved you some time...)

Any positive opinions on SWAT 1+2? I've been eying them for some time now as both look very interesting. They don't seem to be getting much love, though.
I'd like to test one of Sierra's "QUEST"-Games.So any suggestions?Which one's the best?
Most of you seem to favor Quest for Glory.

If you are a adventure game fan, King's Quest is one of the best.

My favorite is King's Quest 6

Indeed, QfG is awesome. It's far less prone to putting you into a dead end without any warning, which is something old KQ and SQ games do all the time.

But Hero Quest (for Glory) is not trulyexctly a "quest game", it oesn't share the mechanics of the the other, more similar to each others, adventure games. It leans towards RPG. It may be better because of that, but it's not representative of the genre.

For pure "quest", I'd suggest the space quest series, without hesitation. Police quest is too technical, King's quest is a bit too simple or (dare I say) bland. Leisure suit larry is fun (especially the 2nd one). Iceman was pretty cool. Space Quest (1,2,3) remain my favorite sierra parser classic adventure games (for their puzzle, humour, references, universe), along with The Colonel's Bequest - which is also a bit different from the quest series, although closer to them than Glory, but has an immensely great dark disturbing atmosphere.
Vampire Redemption owned!!!

;)
Being a teenager in the 80s & playing each of Sierra's "Quest" games as they were released, paying a full $30-$50 retail EACH, it irks me to no end that they are now referred to as "Activision" greats...Activision had absolutely nothing to do with creating those games.

But regardless, great games, great promo.

I was a teenager when all their games came out, so here's my opinion of each series...

King's - great fun if you enjoy medieval themes mixed with fairy tales
Police - a bit of a learning curve due to the nature of police work, but satisfying when you bust someone
Space - lots of humor & sci-fi gags

...so it really depends on what theme you like best.
I'm curious about Interstate '76. Do people think GOG have done basically all they can to make the game compatible with modern systems, at least thus far? (I'm assuming nGlide was integrated into the package to help with compatibility, however that works.) It's one of those "infamous tech" titles, unfortunately, that gave and still gives a bit of a bump to GOG's reputation, like "Seriously? This is BS. What a waste. GOG won't be getting my money again any time soon with this shoddy job." Now of course if this were a GOG standard (highly unstable releases most of the time) then I wouldn't blame people for not purchasing here anymore DRM-free or not (what's the point of buying DRM-free if the game doesn't even work?), but from what I've seen GOG does try to do the best they can.
Attachments:
KQ is for the stoic of for the people, who've already beaten them. The puzzles make no bloody sense most of the times. Oh, and fuck the fairy tale references - if you grew up with regional variations of those tales, you have next to no chance of figuring things out. Be grateful, that QFG didn't expect you to know the Slavic lore when it used its elements.
SQ is for those who don't mind a game, where completely random things will kill your character, and the developers will laugh at you for your failure to predict arbitrary deaths.
