Actually, while you are half right, in practice, all of the digital distribution sites are like gametap/gamefly.
GOG, Impulse, and Gamersgate can all control your access to the games you paid for. The only difference is that Steam can make it impossible to play your already installed titles, while the other three cannot.

Not true for retail. If you own a non-MMO, non DRM'd retail game, NOBODY except a repo man or a judge can prevent you from having access to that game, no matter WHAT you do.
