I was watching the tng episode, the inner light, and was wondering how the others here would feel in the same situation here. Personally i'd almost be pissed off that I couldn't help the people that I was interacting with the whole time, etc.

The probe was a long time in the past. so I would just feel sad that a culture disappeared and glad that they found a way to keep it alive in a way. I do not remember if the episode says, but I would hope that it would be possible for others to experience the "recording".

If a human extinction event happened now (like a big meteorite), the only record of ourselves we have are the two disks aboard Voyager 1 and 2. As far as I am concerned that is not enough.

The next option above cloud storage should be space storage. Might be difficult to get technicians to repair stuff, but they'll figure it out. :D

Indeed, but I'd still feel helpless and would during the experience would be like he dd and try to figure out a way ffor them to survive. Would be one hell of a guilty feeling I'd have.

That's one depressing hour of television if you think about it. Picard spends "the rest of his life" learning to love a new family only to learn they're already dead. And yet they still really gave him something as well. Really beautiful television. I imagine that the memory faded somewhat once Picard was disconnected, otherwise I'm not sure how he could deal with that and all the other things that happened to him in the same year (the Borg).

Speaking of Star Trek, I was reading somewhere that it may be coming back to TV. ST: Captain Worf. Here's what a quick web search dug up.

There was no way how they could have survived, and by the time the Enterprise encounters the probe, the civilization has long died. Picard is not really on that planet, he's living a simulation that they created.

The civilization and the people there were doomed, inevitably. There's a lot of sadness in this story, which is part of what makes it so exceptional. Yet, there are positive aspects to it: They did the one thing they could, which was, preserving their culture in a one-time simulation, which was put onto a probe and shot into space, to give one living person the ability to live a life as people did on their world, so that their culture would not just be completely forgotten. And they took their fate with remarkable dignity.

Doesn't make it any less depressing, and fuck there's gotta be some sort of conspiracy against my stars.

I always thought Picard should have been a lot more angry about being put through that than they showed him being. That was kind of his character though, always calm and scientific, except in extreme circumstances.

It's been so long since I last watched Star Trek TNG. I need to remedy this...

Oh that episode? I fucking hate that episode. One of the reasons, I like Kirk more than Picard...
