kiva: How do they make these embargos? Do they say dont publish or we will never send you review copies?
avatar
Taleroth: Basically they say not to publish before a certain time or they won't invite them to press events and screenings.
Isnt it basically blackmail?

It's blackmail by some definitions, but not by the legal one. Calling it blackmail seems disingenuous.

hedwards: X2 and X3 should have been slam dunks, but they were a complete mess anyways.
disagree about xmen 2.
loved it more than xmen 1 which was just fairly okay imo.

haven't seen last stand but your subjective opinion is wrong :P
they are just saying ignore green lantern, its a screw up

not at all, if I was in a business where I was making cakes, and you were a reviewer of confectionery goods. I could give you a cake, for free before anybody else had one so you could have time to sit down and properly formulate your opinion on my delicious new cake.

I could then, for the sake of balanced reviews, and free publicity tell you not to release the review until a day before my cakes are put into the local bakery. We both win, I get my free publicity and you keep your job going and get a free cake while you're at it.

However if you broke our trust and released an early review I could turn around and think 'well I'm not giving him a free cake, he's just going to break our trust and shaft all of the other publications/ my cake, I just won't let him have any more cakes'

you're still perfectly free afterwards to go out and buy my cake and write your opinion on the cake, it's just you will have to mess about writing it when other publications will just be clicking 'upload' or whatever. and the money will come out of your publication's budget. And cake fans won't be as inclined to read your review because it doesn't have the latest cake in.

So no it's not blackmail it's just a recognition of trust and publicity for both parties.

it's also a very strange allegory that makes me want to go and eat some cake.

Hmm, I didn't like any of them, including Origins, but as you said, it is opinion.

X-Men Origins on the other hand - I was shocked after watching it. It was frikking great :)

Do you mean First Class?

In my opinion:

X2 > First Class >>>>> X1 >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Wolverine >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> X3

First Class it was indeed, working whole day on gazillion things doesn't help to concentrate on what I write.

It was awesome. Can't say the rest of the movies had similar impact...

Finally managed to order X-Men animated series box set :D

The issue I had with Xmen 2 and 3 is that they were so incredibly forgettable, I still have serious problems telling the two apart, which isn't something that is generally consistent with quality film.

I've wanted to re-watch that for a long time, I saw various bits of it but never the full series (If you're talking about the 90s version anyway, I think there might be newer ones?)

Yeah, talking about 90s one :). See, I loved this one. Also spiderman one - IMHO so much better than original series - if I got a penny every time someone told me "yeah, f-off original series had even better music". Whatever, I prefer the rocking theme tune of 90s Spider-man :).

God, childhood memories :) And yes, if you loved it then, it's as good as ever ;)

Anyone who says 90's Spiderman is better than 00's The Spectacular Spiderman is smoking something. Of course I only saw the first couple seasons of the latter, so don't know if it went downhill afterwards or something.

Isn't Spectacular the one where he's a teenager in High School?

I hate when they do that. My nephew loves it, though.
