If the price they are getting for the game (even if it isn't full price) is still enough for them to make a good profit then I'd say that should still be sufficient motivation for them to produce similar games. Or it could also be viewed as motivation that they're on the right track, but they just need to make some tweaks the next time around so that people are willing to pay more. It could also be seen as motivation to set the initial price lower and make up the price difference in volume while the game is still on everyone's minds.

I hope I wouldn't be fooled. If the games get shorter I would want to pay even less.

It's not like with half price for a full game they aren't still making good money. The business is still sufficiently profitable, isn't it?

The incentive is in the shit ton of money they are making even when selling at a discount. If a publisher says it cares only about the first couple of months they are:

A. Stupid
B. Lying to guilt you into paying full price

Funny that you should mention Ubisoft, because I made a conscious decision to vote with my wallet when they brought out Rayman Origins on PC completely free of DRM. I understand it did reasonably well too, so hopefully this is the start of Ubisoft's rehabilitation in the PC gaming world.

I was there when Ubisoft announced that Heroes VI was going to be "DRM-free". I'm not sure what their definition of DRM-free is, but by any conventional definition (i.e. the one where "other DRM" constitutes a form of DRM), that was pretty much a bald-faced lie, and I was very glad that I never pre-ordered it, nor do I have yet to buy it.

I played the demo of Rayman Origins when it showed up on Steam, and I quite like it. However, on GamersGate, the game is listed as having Tagés, and on Amazon, it specifically lists Tagés' Solidshield, which limits concurrents installations and requires an internet connection to install. I don't know if the retail version (As far as I know, there isn't one, right?) is DRM-free, or if the Steam version can be backed up and played independently of the Steam client and any need for an internet connection, but seeing as how the GamersGate version absolutely has DRM, I'd have to argue that it'd be rather hard to say Rayman Origins is completely free of DRM.

Ubisoft, as well as EA, have been doing relatively good as far as DRM-free goes, I'll give them that. They're on GOG and everything, and I think that's fantastic. I have several of their titles here. I even have several DRM-free titles from Ubisoft on Amazon as well. Outside of those exceptions, unfortunately, they're both willing to pretty much remain as deplorable as ever.

Back to Rayman Origins, would you mind telling me more about getting that game "completely free of DRM"? I'm more than a little in the dark on that matter.


Universal truths are remarkably difficult to argue against. I suppose that's why this is the first thing I've seen you say that I wholeheartedly agree with. :P

I have the German retail version, but as I understand it, all of the retail versions are the same. The game installs without any kind of internet connection and does not need an internet connection to run. In fact, it doesn't even have copy protection on the disc. I installed it on my PC just before we got new internet in our new house and it installed, played and ran fine.

The only internet it needs is for the update app, but it just closes without any fuss if it doesn't find a connection.

Everything I say is a universal truth.

I've literally been playing games with steam since 2005. And in 7 years have never lost a save. So I'm not saying it isn't steam, but I am saying there's a good chance it's not.

Eh? I've always thought corrupted saves due to your own memory glitching and ballsing it up in the process.

I also bought Prince of Persia(2008) on principle and I have yet to play it. I also own two copies of the Witcher EE and one copy of teh witcher 2 EE.

You're probably right. This guy seems pretty sure it's steam and I'm saying chances are it's not.
