i got a "new" hp elite desk 800 G1
its an i5 witha decent amount of ram

and a radeon 8490 not exactly the greatest card but not exactly crap either

however i want to upgrade the card soon TM
but there are a few caveats

the pc is a desktop the video card must be in a low formfactor then ( other wise i woudl have bunged my 8800 in there alreadfy )

the psu is 240 watt

and the budget is around 100 euro

what would be my best choice ?

nVidia 750Ti is the magic card. Super-small, super-low-power (doesn't even take extra power off the PCI-E.

P.S. It outperforms the XBOX ONE in Titanfall. It's pretty nice. I installed on in my buddy's computer and he can put WoW up to max and most other games are near-max.

P.P.P.S. Another card says 400W and I saw some things saying it's all about the amperage off the 12V rail (20A). So just grab yourself a nice Corsair PSU. You won't regret it.

Again, you'll still need a new PSU. My 8800 that I used to have needed more than a 240W. I'm suprised you've gotten away with that. Anyhoots, if you can't swing the PSU, then I'm out of ideas. I'd save up for the PSU, then get a good graphics card.

im mostly worried about the size since its a desktop not a tower

so im not sure i can upgrade the psu some desktop si had ( dell and hp ) had propietary psu's
and i cant dig in the machine yet either since it wont arrive untill 3 jan 2015

I have a 750 TI, it's small, I have a full tower case, but the motherboard is a mATX, runs off the pci-e slot power.

I bought the KFA2 version [low profile] [cost me £130, but seen it on overclockers for £89] it was the only one with a VGA output [I use a 9 year old 15 inch monitor]

I did try a full size 750 TI, but my ram was in the way, so bought the low profile one, no low profile brackets were required due to my case being a full tower.

no problems thus far, can play all games I install [not into 3 x 4k monitors / ultra high graphics / just happy to have my eye sight]

right now im eyeballing a radeon r7 420
its low profile and low powered

its not exactly a monster card but an upgrade in regards to my old 8800

From what I'm reading, you can't upgrade your PSU. They make a 320W for the i7 version, but that's as high as it goes.

Radeon r7 420 or 240? I can't find a 420.

It's a very-low ranking card. What sort of on-board graphics do you have? Intel HD4000 is (by Passmark scores) 1/2 as good as the Radeon card and the Intel HD4400 is even closer to it in performance. It might not be worth it to put the card in. I'll see if I can find some other really-low power and size GFX Cards. So far, not so much.

nVidia GT 730 looks like it will work, but it's listed at about the same price and efficacy as the r7 240.

Looks like you don't have too much of a choice here (from what I see). I'll bow out of this and maybe someone else will come along with a great idea.

I had an 8800 GTX or something like that a while back with similar capabilities. It's not horrible, but it can't run newer games too well. My brother got Thief running on it with all settings to low and hitting 15fps or so. So that's really not too bad. And he can play Skyrim smoothly (most settings low).

For the money, it just wouldn't be worth it to me personally. I'd probably stick w/ on-board graphics and wait for a better low-power-consumption card to come out.

I suggest everybody to wait for Nvidia 960/970 to drop in price. It's about the best of new NVidia cards when it comes to heating and power consumption, and it's damn powerful as well. And expensive. But, new generation of Radeons is coming out, which should put some competition out and drop the price, and of course, there are always occassional sales.

its not a horrible card but its not great either
and i tedn to avoid intel's integrated cards

i never had a problem with my 8800 it ran what i wanted it to run quite well after a bit of tweaking

Oh I see, missed that bit of the OP. Not sure to be honest, I've never really concerned myself with that - I don't have a desktop and am planning on getting a bigger case anyway.

but even if i do get a bigger case i will still have that propietary 240 watt psu

so my options are a bit limited

then again i managed to play games with a geforce 210 and a radeon r7 240 or a geforce 730 are both better then that ...thing
