The U.P. has been trying to secede (kind of; they want separate statehood not to abandon the country) for the past 150 years). I don't think we have enough to people to qualify for it though. And no I am not joking. I don't see what the big deal would be; 99% of Michigan either doesn't recognize us or doesn't want us to begin with.
Hello,

When the United States declared independence on the 4th of July in 1777 from the UK/Commonwealth it was not a joke or was it? The people in each region all around the world have the right to live on their own, if they decide so. It is part of international law. It is part of the UN charta. It is a human right.

If Texas decided to secede from the US or California or New York they could do so. They would have to hold a referendum, get a majority vote and then they can build and establish their own state. I like the idea of US member states to want to break free from their corporate masters. I don't know, but i prefer a little freedom & peace over never-ending war on terror and dept slavery.

What the plutokrats massmedia wants to tell you is that people have only one right, pay your taxes and shut up.

Maybe they want to go back to the glorydays of Italian citystates.
The funny thing is that although very wealthy they were military weak.
Maybe they should read some Machiavelli.

singbird: I suppose you read the episode where Uncle Scrooge formed his own country, right? Because it certainly sounds like that's pretty much your only reference for the situation.
yep. good comic.

Why do you think it is so ridiculous?
It smells like politics not really the will of people. bunch of angry nationalists wanting to do their way no matter the cost. What do they want to accomplish? become Monaco or Andora?

If they formed a country, they probably wouldn't automatically be in the EU anyway, so they couldn't really be kicked out.
By kicked out I meant the region. It is now in EU. It wouldn't be if it goes independent.
They could probably buy their power from many other sources if Italy wouldn't sell it to them. Not to mention they probably have their own power plants as well.
Venice and the area are connected to the grid of the rest of Italy. I don't know the details of current supply/demand of the region. yet It is really doubtful to think that the region can meets all of its demand.
I'm pretty sure they don't get their water from 500 kilometers away from the heart of Italy.
And you know that how? Venice for example has to get its water from far away. Is their water supply within the region which wants independence? or is it in Alps?
They probably have their own local garbage removal and they can probably buy disposal services from other countries if they lack facilities.
sure it does have an ability to process some garbage. all of it? very doubtful. Especially Venice which already suffers from trash being dump into the sea. Send it abroad? who will accept that and how will they pay?
Or just build the facilities.
Sure
where would the money for that go?
It's not like you drown in waste in 5 years.
Venice the city is already drowning in waste.
Demand visas to enter Italy? That would ruin the country in your opinion?
Part of destroying the country. How many people living there have family outside the country. How many people depend on rest of the country for source of income. If people cannot travel freely to places which they could visit previously the system is destabilize. Especially if Italians want to be dick about it and make the whole process extremely hard for Venice.

Getting independence these days, in a world were everything is interconnected and interdependent is not an easy move. Especially for little province like Venice.
T'is a fractious world these days, it seems. But I can also see the merit to countries wanting to break away in order to preserving culture and language, and to have a smaller and more locally-responsive governmental structure. Makes it harder to compete on the global stage, but then a lot of nations are largely excluded from that game already.

Frankly I'd like so see some of that here in the States. I'd love for the Cracker State fucknuts to secede and go live in their polluted pocket dystopia so that the rest of us can get on with living like a modern civilisation.

Ummm we didn't declare independence on July 4th, 1777. Just FYI. :D

Um, you do realize they did exactly that and were slapped down, right?
Would they bring back the Doge?
... 'cause I think that'd be really neat...
WHAT THE HELL!???!! Now my own street is asking for independence. This trend has to stop.

Well, somebody has to stop this trend. My street is already independent and now the street in back is moving in on us !!!
Isn't independence good? I always thought overly large organizations tend to attract corruption, create unnecessary large overhead expenses and decrease well beings for most people but I might be entirely wrong on that.

I'm sure that feeling would be quite mutual.

Please do, then. The majority of us would like to return this country to one run by reason and compassion, rather than anger and prejudice. If you sympathise with the latter, I won't be sorry to see you go either.

I agree! Bring back the whole shadowy Venetian court system too. I'd pay good money to be assassinated by a gossamer stranger in a ceramic mask. ;)

See my earlier post on the U.P.

We keep trying.

Of course, we are trying for no other reason than we think it would be kind of funny.

The-Business: From the article: "the vote will not be legally binding."

North Italy sometimes wanted to go separate ways from the South. For self-determination, they would need to be recognized as different from other Italians...
The eastern Half of Washington State is always trying to get itself independent because they're always outvoted in at large elections. I'd kind of like to see them get their independence because that way we could stop subsidizing their lazy asses.
