I'm currently running 64bit vista ultimte on a HP DV9000T with a Core 2 Duo T5500 (Piece of crap but it was that or an extra $350 for 200mhz that I'd likely not notice), GeForce Go 7600 (piece of crap but its a laptop GPU) and 2GB of RAM (doesn't mention the RAM speed so I assume it the cheapest and slowest HP could put in and still call it a working PC). I've whacked in a modded GPU driver thats more up to date but it hasn't helped much
Am I likely to get any appreciable gaming performance boost out of upgrading the ram from 2GB PC5300 to 4GB of PC6400? I can't seem to find information on what the specific model supports in the way of capacity or speed. I found the manual where it tells you how to replace the RAM but not what to replace it WITH.
Anyone able to help? 5 shiny rep points going to the first correct answer, ENTER TODAY!

You probably would see a boost in performance, but it may not be as noticeable as you're hoping for. The big thing that more ram will get you is freeing up some ram from the games to other processes (such as Anti-virus or the OS itself).
You're already running a 64bit OS so you're not limited to 3GB, but each executable is still going to be limited to 2GB for themselves, unless the executable/game was specifically compiled to take advantage of more ram (usually found in things like cad programs or A/V editing apps).
A quick look shows that your laptop runs DDR2 at 667MHz SODIM, with two slots, max 2GB per slot.
Open it up and see if you're running 1x2GB, or 2x1GB.
If it's just one in there a ram upgrade leans more to the no-brainer side of the question, if it's 2 chips in there right now, keep in mind you'll have to replace them both.

i would not "upgrade" from PC5300 to PC6400, since it's not clear if your mainboard supports RAM with faster timings. depending on how many slots DIMM slots you have you should buy 2x2 (or 1 x 2GB...) GB PC5300 or whatever fits into you lappy.

The performance increase in games would be minimal. You'd see slightly better load times and less hard drive caching in games that are intensive (or in other words, probably not meant to be played on your hardware in the first place), but the basic frames per second versus graphics quality you can expect would stay the same. The performance increase in running multiple simaltaneous applications however would be noticeable.
As far as your laptop specs are concered, the RAM is not the bottleneck.

Yeah its the fact I have a laptop... I was sort of hoping to allocate more ram to the GPU but the BIOS is pretty much locked down tight. DAMN I miss desktop computers...

If you're really looking to boosting your gaming capabilities on a laptop, there's some pretty sweet new ones coming out now with "next year's" models (usually the 20XX version is introduced around October the preceding year).
The Acer 5935G for example boosts a GTX 240M and is able to pull Crysis on high with very much playable FPS. It's also dirt cheap compared to last year's models with the same graphics capability. You should be able to pick up one of those for about £750, and it'll hold you over for a good 2-3 years.

Nah I need to boost my gaming capabilities with my current laptop because I can't afford to get a new REAL computer. For the price of that lappy I could get a better specced gaming desktop
