Hello everyone,
I would like to update you on the latest changes to GOG Downloader (the optional app that can be used to download your GOG.com purchases).
We have just released an updated version (0.9.30) which includes three important things:
1. a faster app core (thx to updated Adobe AIR Runtime, and jQuery 1.3.3)
2. updated file resuming, witch will now allow:
- more reliable auto-resuming, witch should fix _some_ of the problems
- auto discovery of incomplete/complete files
3. an option to send bug report to gog.com
If you have the downloader already installed, you will be notified about the update next time you launch the app; if you don't have the app yet, check out the list of downloads in My Account page for any of your purchases)
2. UPDATED APP CORE
While updating our source code, we also updated all libraries involved which should make the whole app a bit faster and less resource hungry.
3. UPDATED FILE RESUMING
This was, and still is, the most important thing about the downloader. We have received numerous reports from our users, that there are issues with this, especially on slower, less reliable, connections.
The real problem with fixing this is actually recreating this situation, to have a peek at what's really causing this. We tried a lot of different setups, we've used faulty network hardware, we used cellphones as modems to access Internet, we tried disconnecting cables on different levels of the connection, we used software to slow the connection down, we tried downloading files to very slow hard drives, but so far we couldn't recreate problems that some of you were experiencing.
So, as the first step, we changed the way that files are handled, discovered, and resumed. It should help with at least some of the problems.
The second thing, was to enable the downloader app to discover files from previous sessions. This means that if you have an incomplete file backed up before the downloader encountered an error, you can copy that incomplete file into download folder, then add the game to the downloader again, and the app will continue from the incomplete file instead of starting at zero. This is hardly a resolution for the problem, but it will at least allow for some temporary workaround, until we get all the issues sorted out.
So if you have problems using the downloader, you can try to:
1. Start the download normally
2. From time to time, make a copy of the temporary files in the GOG Downloader downloads folder to a safe backup location
3. If the downloader encounters an error click "Send report" (more info below), and shut it down
4. Copy your backed up files back into GOG Downloader downloads folder
5. Relaunch the app, and resume the transfer (or add the game again using the website), the transfer should resume at the point of last backup
Please remember, that this is only a temporary workaround as we work on fixing all the real issues.
3. BUG REPORTS
As mentioned before, we are adding an option to submit bug reports straight from the downloader. Every time you encounter an error while using GOG Downloader, you will have an option to "Send report" to us - please click on it, as it is essential for understanding and solving the problems :).
The report includes:
* GOG Downloader application logs (detailed information about file transfers and errors)
* your gog.com user name
Report does NOT include:
* any personal or hardware info (no hardware logs, no apps list, etc)
We will keep these logs as short as possible and we'll be using them only to find & fix bugs in GOG Downloader. After that we will delete them. We won't spam you, won't spy on your system and won't create any stats regarding downloader and it's usage.

MilesTeg1974: Help...

Well, I'm sorry I can't help you myself, but I bet that if you contact GOG's support team they'll check out what might be the problem. Use the 'Support' tab and good luck with that.

It's more of an Adobe AIR issue, then a problem with the downloader itself. Do you by any chance use an app called "Folder Lock", because it is known to cause problems for Adobe AIR apps.

Yes, I do.
I have installed some time ago a demo version, which I can't uninstall because I have forgotten the password. Without it the pprogram doesn't allow uninstall.

I'm afraid that uninstalling Folder Lock is the only known way to make AIR apps work. At least for the time being. Maybe you could request some assistance from the authors of Folder Lock?

OK. Just to inform you about the result of contact with the Folder Lock customer suport:
I had to BUY full version in order to get access to uninstaller!!!
Well, I had no other solution - so I did what the hijackers asked - 40$ down the drain.
But, just in case someone else gets the same problem I kept the uninstaller file and instructions so if any one has the same problem, I am here to help.
In any case, NewSoftware's Professionals, Inc. are now on my black list.

Well that sucks big time, sorry to hear that :( Makes you wonder what the word "Professionals" is doing in the name of the company.
If you have some free time on your hands you can always tell your story to the http://consumerist.com/ . They love to publish this kind of stuff :)

I noticed that after I start download I have great download speed (~145 KB/s) but after some time (hour or so) the speed drops to just 11-14 KB/s.
Is this something I need to check with my provider or is it to do with your server?
I noticed that the downloader pauses by itself and doesn't automatically resume. I would come back to my computer and would have to hit the resume button - this is really frustrating.
Also, please check your server as it breaks connection very easily. I normally don't have a problem with large downloads, but your server seems to break and since you do not allow resuming downloads, we are basically forced to use GOG downloader. I think this may leave the impression that you are driving customers towards having to use the downloader.
How do I use GOG's Downlaoder?
I see "Add to Downloader", I click on it. The message is then "Added to queue".
What happens next?

You have to have Adobe Air installed as well as GOG's downloader. Once you have both installed you double click on the downloader icon to get it to fire up, and your download will start.
Hope this helps!

If there's a problem with the connection, the Downloader app will repeatedly try to reconnect. So when your network connection is back online, transfer should resume automatically after like 60 seconds max.
If you have to resume transfers manually, then it looks like there's some problem / error that prevents app from reestablishing the connection. It would be great if you could send us your Downloader's log file, so our devs could look into that. Please refer to this post on how to find the Downloader's log file.

after I downloaded the air downloader it worked fine then it just went into the paused mode and I cannot get it to resume, any ideas
I've just finished downloading Fallout - the downloader reports that it completed, but the progress bar didn't fill up all the way, and it says 490.8 of 505.3MB.
I ran the Fallout installer and it didn't have any issues (would if fail if there were any problems with the download?), but I've only run it until the title screen so far.
I downloaded it while on my MacBook with OS X, if that makes any difference. I've also kept a copy of the gogDownloader.txt file.

Hi telemachuszero. Currently all games available @ GOG.com have self-integrity check built into the installer, so if the downloaded file was incomplete you wouldn't be able to proceed with the installation.
It looks like a small bug inside the GOG.com Downloader . Sec ago I've redownloaded Fallout via GOG.com Downloader @ OS X 10.5 but I couldn't reproduce that problem. Nevertheless, I'll send the info to our devs to look into that. Thanks!

number13, does this happen every time you pause the GOG.com Downloader / after you've relaunched it? Also, have you received any error message when installer went to paused mode?
If you could reproduce the problem, please send us the log file. You'll find all the info in this post. Please note that log file is wiped every time the app is restarted, so you have to send the logs just after the problem happens but before restarting the Downloader. Thanks!
