Good Games Never Get Old, but They May Drop in Price.

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Prices have reached new lows for Mr. Bree+, which has dropped its price from $9.99 to $2.99 permanently. Recent speculation in the pork futures market has lead to a steep decline in estimated value of anthropomorphic pig-persons, and as a result you, my dear gamer, can pick up this awesome hardcore platformer about a pig, a kidnapping (pignapping?), and a journey home.

Maybe jumping and running and falling and dying and jumping again isn't your thing? Don't worry then, because we've also dropped the price on Restaurant Empire--it's now just $5.99. If you've ever dreamed of being a restaurant tycoon whose knowledge of the industry and skill selecting sous-chefs make you a superstar, then this is incontrovertibly a game for you! Select everything from the food that's on the menu to the font that's on the menu, and see how your actions result in a successful Restaurant Empire!
Mr. Bree+ was too expensive at $9.99. $2.99 is a much better price for a game like this, there are just too many platformers out there. Platformers are a dime a dozen in bundles so most people probably won't spend 10 bucks for one nowadays.

Restaurant Empire is an absolute DISASTER. Certainly not worth more than $1 during some insane sale. Dreadful game.

Vercinger: While Restaurant Empire is worth the $10, a price drop is still reasonable because there's a sequel that's actually a standalone expansion with the entire base game included, so there's barely any reason to buy the base game at all. But I'd have thought Enlight would also release the sequel here, to coincide with the price drop.

Maybe they don't want to release here anymore because of their recent love affair with DRM. I sincerely hope I'm wrong.
Are you talking about Restaurant Empire II? Will that game contain both games or am I misunderstanding you?

011284mm: I personally think that the real problem with pricing these days is we have all become so accustom to sales. If you look on the front of Steam, GamersGate, Gameolith, GOG they all run regular sales and it has become the norm for games to be sold with a high regular price so they can run the 60% discount every few months and still be making money.
I think it's worth giving more consideration to the reasons why sales have become so prevalent. Part of it is due to the fact that digital is only of interest to a lot of people while such heavy price reductions are available. Another key aspect is that the competition on the market is absurd - the PC gaming market is simply extremely oversaturated and is heading for a crash.

011284mm: For the indie developers I often wonder if the selling at a lower price point works any better as they might get 1000x$3 instead of the 200x$10, but as I read somewhere on these forums before. Indie games only tend to sell high quantities on sales before then plunging back into obscurity after the sale until the next time. So it is now to just wait and see how things pan out for the developer of Mr Bree.
That's pretty much the crux of it.

Indie devs may think they're doing themselves a favour with these heavy short-term mark-downs, but in the long run they're only cannibalising their own market. Indie bundles and heavy sales should have been the last resort for attracting fence-sitters, but the fact that they are reliant on these sales methods to survive now shows how fundamentally broken the PC gaming market is.
Mr. Bree is an interesting case; selling worse then equally expensive games that were much worse-reviewed by the community, e.g. Fist Puncher. But the release thread made it pretty clear that parts of the GOG community were already getting heartily sick of "super challenging puzzle platformers" by the time Mr. Bree+ came along--only one poster even commented on the price. Of course, it can't have helped.

Ugh, Fist Puncher...
Love me some updates with the little circular arrow icon on the front page. I do prefer reading about compatibility updates (Populus 3 hint), extra bonus content, language updates, etc., but price drops certainly make others happy.
As a huge platformer fan, I can confirm that at $2.99, Mr. Bree is still not worth it.
I think 2.99$ is an appropriate price for all platformers since they are more or less the same. I don't really see the difference since there is no difference in gameplay.

Yes, but I don't know what the alternative is.

Frankly, a large part of the Video Game Market are people who have multi-year backlogs. Meaning that under the traditional market, I wouldn't even buy a game since I won't even be able to play it until 2017.

But at a 75% discount? I'll bite, and hope that one day I'll get to.

So they get 25% of retail price from me through a sale, and 0% otherwise.

The problem isn't that I'm cheap (I do buy full priced games too), but in all likelihood, I'm buying a game I won't get the chance to ever play.
I'll be honest, I couldn't possibly have been any less interested in Mr Bree, but now I really want to reward the decision of pricing it to sell. I might give this a shot once I finished Lost Alpha.

tinyE: Good stuff. We need more posts like this on the review page. Thank you!

Vercinger: I actually wrote a review on the game some time ago, but couldn't post it because of the ridiculous character limit on reviews. So now it's gathering dust in a text file somewhere, waiting for the GOG staff to come to their senses.
+1

It's nice that gog asks users about how they could improve the forums, but first of all I think that the review section in the game cards needs to be fixed. The character limit needs to be removed (or at least increased to 10000 characters) and you should be able to edit/delete your reviews if necessary.

Amen to this. I've given up writing reviews for GOG games, since I have to prune them back to fortune cookies before it will accept them.
I guess Mr. Bree sales results was pretty damn bad if they decided to go 70% permanently....
Cannot say i surprised, everyone who wanted was able to get it for 0.75$ on Groupees before Desura release...
I like Mr. Bree+. It's a well-made precision platformer with good atmosphere and music. It's obviously inspired by Super Meat Boy, but has its own style and is nowhere near as insanely twitchy. And $3 is a wonderful price.

That's what people call a "genre".
