OK, now let's see how Onslaught works for you guys... :)

Firek: OK, now let's see how Onslaught works for you guys... :)

I just stopped playing a minute ago, time to jump back on and get killed some more I guess.
this... this is the coolest thing ever. i am about to cry because i just got back to school and my house doesn't have internet yet and i want to play on these servers NOW
I am probably going to be getting on a lot at 2 in the morning drunk and wasting my team's raptors.
gog staff: has this been popular enough so far that it will continue? and maybe be applied to other games?
Well it's not my decision to make, but if the current population of a dozen-or-so players on Onslaught keeps up, I think it's worth to keep the servers alive. :)
We'll need to set up a sticky thread for each server soon, so that we (and you) could arrange future games ahead of time. Let's face it, most people play TF2 and CoD4 for online FPS games, and it's doubtful that a UT2k4 server will be full all the time... So we'll need to organize a bit so everyone intereested knows when to log on, eh? ;)
Right now I wish we had Tribes 2 and a server for that... Playing UT2k4 made me recall this second best online FPS ever (second after PlanetSide)... :)

I had to drop out of Onslaught because something started choking my bandwidth, but it was fun up until then. I didn't accomplish anything useful, though, other than shooting down about 4000 raptors piloted by Ralackk :p
Well I have to say it was worth reinstalling UT2004! I'm used to the original UT and I'm a bit rusty on UT2004 but it's still plain fun. I was surprised how smooth this server plays as well.
This is only my opinion but UT2004 is much better in modes like Onslaught, though Assault isn't too bad. Double Domination or CTF are also nice but I much prefer the way it plays in UT, and definitely UT for DM. Only trouble with this is that these modes require a fair number of players to be really fun.
Well whatever the game and mode, the crowd there seems nice, which is probably the most important thing for online play.
PS: Tribes 2 = good, and it's free. I probably suck at it now.

As we all have witnessed, it was even more awesome :).

Ahh that explains why my piloting life expectancy went up tenfold after a while. Nevertheless I had alot of fun, especially in onslaught mode. Once I figure out how to actually aim in that game I'll be golden.

Do what I do... use weapons that spray, splash and explode :p

Thats all of them except the sniper rifle isn't it? :P

I'd say the minigun, the rockets and the flak cannon are the main spread (i.e. noob) weapons. You can get some sort of coverage with most of the weapons, I guess, but it tends to be awkward (in particular the shock combo - if you can pull that off consistently and effectively while simultaneously dodging rockets, you don't need any help aiming).

Yeah, there's nothing as annoying as a highly skilled combo whore. They're just plain deadly.
But each weapon has its place, except possibly the bio rifle, which is rather useless in UT2004. They actually made it a decent weapon in UT3 though. Changing weapons according to the situation is very important in all the UT games.
Oh, the bio rifle is pretty cool for defense. But I prefer the weapons in UT, where even the starting pistol is quite deadly. By comparison some weapons of UT2004 feel a bit underpowered compared to others.
Yeah, some of the weapons in 2k4 are kinda fail. The assault rifle just sucks compared to UT's enforcer, and the link gun doesn't have the punch that something so annoying to use should have (I guess it's mainly meant for its linkup function in team games, but nobody ever uses that, either). The bio rifle does do a lot of damage if used properly, but it's rather specialized, and it's not too hard to avoid the globs (though it can slow someone down if they're chasing you).
When I'm playing alone, I use the GJAC assault rifle mod - it actually makes the AR a bit too powerful, honestly, but I'd rather play with that than the stock model. I also use another mod to cut the strength of shield powerups in half; I personally feel that shields are much too powerful in 2k4.

Yeah, compared to UT, most weapons in UT2004 feel wussified. And to think they are still powered up compared to UT2003 ... Speaking of the bio rifle, it's extremely deadly in UT. Even the ripper, which is the only weapon I dislike in that game, can do an instakill with a bit of luck.
I just used the original UT weapons mutator in UT2004, that's like day and night in terms of brutality! The rocket launcher is definitely the best exemple: load 6 rockets vs 3. Sure, it's overkill but it gets the message across!
On another note: I forgot how beautiful that game still looks. It's too bad though that the musics do not reach the same level as the original. Face sure looks nice in UT2004 but it has a very dark music, different from the upbeat theme of the original. UT just has a very good art direction and some surprisingly beautiful combinations of graphics and musics. Quite different from a game like Q3 who has mostly functionnal maps without much artistic direction.
Aw, now I feel all nostalgic inside.
Edit: heck, my second favourite CTF map after Face-SE (from the fourth bonus pack, the only one not included in the GOTY version, it's a better version of Face because it has miniguns instead of rippers) is Lava Giant. That one is just plain awesomeness made digital.
Re-edit: UT also has the best mutators EVAR: the relics. These are already in the GOTY version from GOG.
Re-re-edit: bah, adrenaline combo are annoying, just like the trick jumps in some maps. It just feels a bit alien for that sort of game and kind of distract you from what's important: shooting other people.
