UFO: Afterlight, UFO: Aftersock, UFO: Aftermath. People hate it, because it's 'not X-com', although it obviously tries to be. I love it, because they're just damn good games. I find their story good, their gameplay fun ... Well, etc, etc :D Maybe you'll want to crucify me for saying that, but I -like- them more than X-com games - I guess their overral gameplay / design suits me better. Is there anyone else, who at least likes these games? :-)
... Oh, by the way: Czech production :-P Sorry, I just HAD to write this :D
My mistake, thought we were talking about X-COM

Only played Afterlight, but yes, it's excellent. Passing it off as just an XCOM clone is a mistake, it has so much more to offer.
My biggest gripe with the After* series was the lack of real proper turn based game.
Hell I basicly finish half of the Afterlight game by putting my guys on overwatch and leaving them in the start position.
They were fun, but I love real turn based strategy, managing APs of characters and all.
Yeah, I have to admit the tactical combat in Afterlight isn't very tactical at all.
Well I try to play UFO: Afterlight when it first came out with great hopes in my soul and mind. But it disappointed me. From story point of view it was cool. It has its own touch, its own version of aliens and personality of human side. But gameplay was just week - RTS/Turn mix was unbalanced to me, sometimes my target or my team spawn in place where you just cant left (like river in the city) and base construction was not that cool. It also has some good points like attacking bases etc. But overall it was disappointment - not because it wasn't X-Com, just because it wasn't that good...
I try UFO: Aftershock with bigger reserve (still remembering first one). I was happy that it starts from the "other ending" of first one. Also it has much stronger gameplay from the first one. It was much, MUCH, better and cool to play. Still I didn't finish it but I must admit that this one is much stronger and better position. If I ever recommend that series I usually say that they should start from the second one.
I never try third one but I heard that it is even better than second one.
Btw - from X-Com style game I usually recommend UFO: Extraterrestrial as a spiritual successor of the X-Com style and feel. It is cool and fun so try it ppl :)
Yes, Extraterrestial was one project I had my fingers crossed since its beginning... Still, I didn't finish it: I just suck at turn-based games :D
But you're right, since UFO: Aftershock, gameplay gets even better, to the best one in Aftermathe - although one thing I dislike about it is non-personal feel, caused by soldiers stuffed into space suits...
I miss launching a vortex grenade at a level made entirely out of glass.
I enjoyed the first to UFo games but havent managed to play the 3rd. Although graphics are not great the game playes well.
Would love to see an updated X-com game.
I still think the creators of UFO: Extraterrestrials are vultures. They're not just making money from someone else's idea, they're making money from someone else's game. It's exactly the same! As in, exactly exactly. That's just not right. (there is actually one notable change, but it's a very silly change)
By the way, Afterlight is the third in Altar's series, so I'm not sure which of the games you're talking about Skreczi. Either way, I can't defend the tactical combat, because it really is simplistic and dumb in Afterlight, and I can't imagine it being better in the first two. But the strategic layer? Amazing; very deep and open-ended, almost like a Civilisation or 4X game. I didn't see that coming at all.
Sorry - I was talking about UFO: Aftermath.
U:E i will defend toomorow after a good night of sleep ;) Cya then :)

The not be able to hire soldiers thing?
U:E is just not X-Com. It tries to be it 100% and that's why it fails since it doesn't emulate it properly. Not to mention it hurts the eyes more than X-Com. :P
Dear God (or is it Gog?),
Please add X-Com or UFO series to the Gog.com catalogue of games.
Thank you and Amen,

Just know ahead of time that I'm going to do an absolutely terrible job of attacking Extraterrestrials - in fact, I've pretty much worn out all my material already. I hardly spent any time with the game, just enough to see that it was far too close for comfort, which (like ZuljinRaynor said) made the fact that it just didn't feel right stand out even more.
And yeah, I meant the Soldier hiring/health system thing.

You still haven't defended U:E yet. I am curious as to what you have to say.
