Nooo! This sucks. Beyond Good & Evil 2 is probably going to get locked up in this.

Aliasalpha: If they were to patch the DRM out after a year (when almost all the piracy damage would b done), THEN I'd support something like this.

Sure, a lot of us would support it... But tell me - wouldn't you just WAIT for a year and then buy it ;] ? If yes - that's exactly why it would make no sense. The patient would wait, the pirates would feast - no one wins.
Of course - there is a chance people would go "I'll bear with this for a year, as long a it's temporary"...
On a side note - this system is already (kinda) in place. In fact - it is the reason we are here ! Publishers release games DRM-free some time after their launch... and they put them on GOG.

Actually no, with a guarantee of DRM removal on a pre-set date and barring other stupid drmmy side effects like needing to ask permission in writing to pause the game so you can go to the bathroom, I'd buy them immediately

This sounds nice... but I doubt any company would think this way. If they are going to pay for the DRM anyway, it may seem "wasteful" to them to just throw it away after a while...
Also - the "always online" thing DOES make sense but only for REALLY multiplayer-oriented games like L4D or SC2 (and even these DO have an option to play offline single-player, if you really want to)... But - Settlers :\ ?
I know the Interwebz are a great thing for computer games but I demand a subset of them to be the offline-capable stuff I'm going to need a few moments from now...
OK - I've got a bus to catch. Thankfully - I have HoMaM and Abe's Odysee to keep me busy ;P.

Ubisoft will most likely be putting this on most releases from now on--even Settlers 7 has it, and that's not exactly a high-profile title.

The Settlers 7 IS the launch title for this DRM crappyness, along with AC2 for PC. Even the beta of S7 has "a beta" of this new DRM, for testing.
And yep, all Ubi's major titles will use this crap.

Maybe by "we don't think people will mind" they mean "anyone who would mind will know how to crack it anyway." :P

ARRGH!
Silent Hunter 5 was looking sooo good, and is near release and UBISoft adds this crap DRM.
They are going to ruin a 100% singleplayer Sim with a limited (although dedicated) fanbase. Many of the SH fansites are really pissed about it saying they won't buy the game, and TBH I believe they will mainly stand by that. I know my interest has gone WAY down, and the same for my friends.
On top of that by making it so the save games are not on the client computer means campaign editing mods and stat trackers probably won't work, the heart and soul of the SH 3 and 4 mods.
Steam may have its problems, but at-least I can turn to offline mode or not worry if my internet goes out while playing singleplayer (I had it go out for 5 hours while playing Tropico 3... didn't notice till I exited).

Saves are stored on the computer and in the cloud. Says so in one of the FAQs. They need to be in order to continue your game should your net cut out mid-game (another confirmed functionality). This is why it'll be easy to crack.

Does anybody know how to contact ubisoft? I was going to write an email or something to them explaining that despite looking forwards to Silent hunter 5, I was not going to purchase it due to the DRM (I did the same with EA and Mass Effect, it can't hurt), but their 'contact us' pages only contain phone numbers and snail mail addresses.
Any ideas?

Here
Choose your words carefully though. Ubisoft isn't like Valve, they don't give a crap what the supporters think. I managed to get a decent answer because I was as slimey as Slimer.

I will never buy a game with this.
Ever. I can't.
I'm going into the Navy relatively soon, and I'll be months without an internet connection. So Ubisoft can go stick it where the sun don't shine, they obviously don't want me to buy their games.

I know this is OFF, but what do you really think you can accomplish by joining the miliary? The world is fucked up by the US-Army enough already, so please think about it.

Please don't derail the thread with a question like that. :P
