I just feel that comparing GOG to Apple is an insult to GOG. Apple makes its fortune purveying closed-system, DRM-ridden, regionally priced iCrap. GOG... does not.

Andy_Panthro: Personnally, I think they should go for anything good that they can get their hands on. From time to time, other competitors will have better prices. However, they will not necessarily have a better product.
GOG needs as much variation in its games as possible, to attract as many people as possible. For them, this means plenty of cash, for us, it means a large collection of cheap DRM free games with added extras.

Ubi/Steam can do as they please, i buy gog for the convenience of zero-DRM.
notably i just bought Pop and BGaE on GoG.

And they got there how? by not competing at all? While the prospect that steam feel threatened by GOG is currently not at all that likely that doesn't mean they dont see them as a competitor. Seeing as that is in fact what GOG is. Not a huge one granted but they share a few key titles and GOG (ok this is kind of guesswork seeing as I have not seen GOG sales reports etc. but its certainly the impression I get) has a rapidly expanding customer base. Steam did not get as big as it is by disregarding other online distributors.
Steams recent deals on oddworld and ubisoft games are probably not mere coincidence. They are probably an effort (i do not mean this as steam having some sort of paranoid freaked out vendetta against GOG) to check the expansion of a new and growing retailer. That is after all business as usual.

danly: But to give one service, the dominant service no less, a significant boost by having a release-week sale is just, well, unkind.

Its probably the very fact that its the dominant service that ubisoft focussed their efforts on steam. Also "unkind" welcome to capitalism :P

Can't say I'm bothered by what steam does.
I'll support GOG in the hope of getting some of the really Good OLD Games which I can hardly get elsewhere. If they gain momentum and success, perhaps I'll start seeing those games here.

cogadh: Actually, I don't think Ubi would be responsible for that. It was far more likely a tactic implemented by Valve/Steam. Vavle has mentioned that they are starting to see distributors like GOG as competition, so it is not really surprising that they would try to circumvent the GOG/Ubi goodness by holding a sale on Ubi products.

danly: Ubisoft chooses the price and selects the deals on Steam. Valve has made it clear that weekend deals and general prices are the publisher's prerogative, not Valve's.

Well they hired an experimental psychologist for these deals so I assume they have at least half the say in it.
