I've had a long-standing prejudice against Steam, stemming from the fact they required you to have their client running while running games (which I understand may have changed now). Then Dawn of War 2 and the latest Total War came out, both games I would have bought on first sight (having bought all the earlier titles in both series), causing me to re-evaluate my prejudice. So I looked into what they're up to now just in case they had recanted their villainy. And I came across this:
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=9828-SFLZ-9289
Right ... Steam has "severe issues" with the most popular anti-virus packages available. Strike One.
And then I saw several threads on www.quartertothree.com in which people who had bought *store* copies of these titles having no end of problems actually playing them because they couldn't authenticate on Steam. Strike Two.
And then ... there was no need for Strike Three. In short, because of Steam, I saved about $100 (and will undoubtedly save more in the future) on games I would have otherwise bought on Day One. The only other form of DRM I've actually boycotted is StarForce, and the few games I unwittingly bought with that crapware on actually worked (although the DRM itself screwed up a machine in the long run and buggered a CD drive.).
So even if Steam were giving away their games to convince me to install their Steaming-Pile DRM, I would say no. I don't know how many games I bought from GOG, but my account has 9 shelves, and that includes games I have the original boxes and CDs for but which for convenience (and to support GOG), I have bought again.
I also use Impulse, but I will be buying Warlords Battlecry 3 from GOG for much the same reason. (Impulse doesn't dictate what software you have on your machine, but it does require downloads and updates through their client, and is therefore not as Pure as GOG.)
So, I will be buying UbiSoft titles through GOG (including a repurchase of BG&E, which I bought years ago but never got around to playing) as a thank you for being alone in the gaming universe for being true to the anti-DRM cause, rather than like Gabe, mouthing platitudes and doing bugger-all about it.

Good people of GoG community, you have convinced me. I had the steam's weekend deal pack in my virtual shopping cart but after reading the forums here, thinking and talking about this I decided to remove it.
I own a retail copy of Far Cry, just have to find it, and I don't really care about DM,M&M. I will probably buy BGAE today and think a little more about IL2.
I want to say that I chose GoG and not Steam weekend deal, not only for the lack of DRM or the extras like soundtrack and wallpapers but because I want to support GoG. I do realize this may sound a little... I don't know... fanboy-ish? Or not economically smart, but what can I say... I love GoG.com, the games sold here and the service.
IL2 will probably have to wait a little longer until next month arrives.

Congrats on choosing a superior platform and model. :D
I noticed this as well, somehow I had a strange feeling that a deal like that would come up when I first saw "Ubisoft week".
Even if, most likely, it isn't a voluntary strike against GOG (at least I hope so, otherwise it would be an enormous, ERECTED dick move), that gave me the right stimulus to buy some of the Ubi games from GOG, even if i own them already, just to show my support.
I hope someone else realizes that a few dollars more are definitely worth the extra goods, the service, and most of all the customer-oriented mentality that GOG has and has shown towards us. This is something that Steam only boasts to have.
Show your support, people! :-D
GOG's hitting back a bit with the contests

Just bought Beyond Good and Evil (from our good friends here I should point out, I never use Steam), and if I don't win the competition, I expect I might get POP and Far Cry.
...
i'll buy Prince of Persia sometime next week to repay for me not getting Beyond good and evil from here. I wouldn't buy it normally as I have a little interest in platform games even great ones.
Oh shit. Ohhh, shit. I like extras, I like choosing my install paths, but that deal is calling...
However difficult it may be, I'll wait for GOG to respond in kind. (Please?)
Buying it from GoG and not from Steam is the way for me. Note that I'm no antiSteam fanatic, I am just a former customer pissed off by their "regional pricing". I have declared that I won't buy a thing from Steam until they fix it (my only sin was The Spectromancer) except very, very good deals. But I will resist this time, so less money for games on steam = more money on GoG games.

you could have gotten spectromancer on playgreenhouse
Why on earth would Ubisoft draw attention away from a distributer where they sell each title for $9.99, over to another where they sell a package of titles for $9.99? Logical business sense indicates the former will earn you less money. I'd be willing to bet Steam had a hand in this.
Yes!

Zeewolf: This is why I personally feel GOG should focus more on older and/or somewhat unknown games. When they release these relatively new games (note: I'm NOT trying to start the "how old is old"-debate again), they will run into more and more situations like this, where they end up in direct competition with much bigger players who also sell these games.
What GOG should focus on, to avoid situations like this, is to release games that aren't found anywhere else. As long as they do that, they're in their own niche where they have almost total control.
Bah, saw the weekend deal right now. I already got a physical copy of BG&A, bought IL-2 Sturmovik earlier today, already have a physical copy of DMM&M, while Far Cry I'm going to buy here, on what Welock called the superior platform, and rightfully so.
