blotunga: It does have a pretty steep learning and adjustment curve as it is a very complex game. Stay away from M.A.X. 2 though... seriously :D
Oh that might explain it, I only tried MAX2, because I thought it would be the better version. Does it suck compared to 1, how?

It sucks on so many levels. It wants to be a RTS. Many things were simplified, much of the strategic depth was lost. I've tried it only a bit and couldn't stand it.
Ok cool, thanks, so I gotta play part 1 then, on the first startup it already looks much better, thanks!

Sachys: So... other than 4x / grand strats and the obligatory X-Com / UFO and Worms games... what is there?
If you like tactical isometric/fixed 3D games like XCOM, I recommend Jagged Alliance games, Battle Isle Platinum for Incubation, S2: Silent Storm, Xenonauts, and Shadowrun Returns. My personal favorite is Jagged Alliance 2 with the 1.13 mod. Also, some of the turn-based RPGs can have quite tactical combat, Temple of Elemental Evil with the Co8 patch being my favorite RPG in this regard having a plethora of rules and options. I haven't played Divinty: Original Sin yet but it looks like it has plenty of tactics with its turn-based gameplay too.

I also prefer the turn-based games but if you're willing to give some real-time games a shot, Police Quest: Swat 2 (you can play as the bad guys too!), Commandos, Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood, Desperados, and Soldiers: Heroes of World War 2 are all enjoyable.
I'd like to add Heroes of Might & Magic 6, as it is nothing like HOMM with all that DRM added to it by Ubisoft :P
King of Dragon Pass. Has narrative events that can alter the game for many seasons. It's just... awesome.
How about the Age of Fear games:

Age of Fear: The Undead King
Age of Fear: The Chaos Lord

http://www.age-of-fear.net/

Windows, Mac, & Linux versions. Demos available.

And:

No nasty DRM!

Piracy exists and there is no arguing about that. Those people do not have any respect for someone's hard work. But we will not allow this sad fact to annoy our valuable customers!

Our products ship with just a simple serial key check. It's delivered to you by email and all you need is to copy and paste it once. That's it! No online check, no hardware protection and no need to keep a disk in the drive.

If you ever decide to change operating system (we suggest Ubuntu!), your serial key is interchangeable and we will be happy to provide an alternative installer.
Btw... Vote:

(Sure, they're already DRM-free, but the publicity could help the developer, and it'd be nice to have them here.)

I will try the demo for AoF 2.
A few I've added to my wishlist on various platforms (or just made a note of so far) - a lot of HOMM-like games also.
MORE PLEASE!

What is the style that is attracting you the most?
Somebody mentioned Steel Panthers III. I would recommend Steel Panthers:WW2 and Steel Panthers Main Battle Tank. Both are based on SP2 and have added so much stuff and bugs fixed that they are really new games.

Besides that, they are free!

Narp.
The Fall From Heaven mod got me to buy Civ IV.

Spellforce might be a worth a look, it's that RT-with-pause hybrid like Baldur's Gate. (I stink at RTS but could handle this.)

It wasn't a hit at my house at all, but Etherlords 1 & 2 might be your cup of tea.

Count me as another vote for Alpha Centauri, as well.
