Yeah... I'm one of those people who cannot stand HOMM, AOW etc. Pretty much nothing about the games appealed to me.


So... other than 4x / grand strats and the obligatory X-Com / UFO and Worms games... what is there?

I like Fire Emblem, that might not be what you're wanting though. Super Robot Taisen is rather good as well, but those two are Strategy RPG's. I remember playing Steel Panthers III when I was a kid, and I liked it an awful lot.

Just remembered: Panzer Tactics DS and Advance Wars Days of Ruin are really good portable TBS games. Have you tried Fantasy Wars? I also enjoy King's Bounty.

Not sure I get it right but :

1) King's Bounty is basically Expeditions Conquistador, but I'd also say that both of them are HOMM, so... :-/

2) There are lots of tactical turn-based games, such as : UFO, Xenonauts, Omerta, Jagged Alliance, Fallout Tactics, Gorky 17, Hammer and Sickle (Silent Storm), etc...

3) In what category would you put Masters of Magic ? It's a bit the best of them all...

4) The banner's saga ?

Yes, I love the UFO and X-Com / XCOM games and Gorky 17 (when it works) - so those other suggestions I'll look up.

MoM is definately more of a 4x kinda game. I'm not big on the combat in it though.

Funny, I'd say HoMM and AoW are what passes for "standard". 4x would be things like Civ, GalCiv, MoO, Warlock. So... are you looking for turn-based tactics, perhaps (Jagged Alliance, X-COM)? Or something inbetween?

I do love me some 4x games, but I'm looking more along the lines of more standard TBS - rather than grand strategies.

So... other than Blackguards or Expeditions: Conquistador, has anyone any suggestions? - If you have any experience of the game you suggest, please write a little about it and where it can be bought from.

Sounds like you want Fantasy Wars, Elven Legacy, Panzer Corps, Battle Worlds Kronos.

Or how about Qvadriga? A very unusual turn based chariot racing game and I love it, its awesome, get it!

Well, unless you're being scatterbrained not to mention it, get Jagged Alliance 2! JMich will tell you anything you need to know about it, and probably more than you'd like :P
