pi4t: Only the Master of Orions, not Master of Magic.
You're right. Sorry. :)
I wonder why noone mentioned Lords of the Realm 2. I think it can be regarded as an ancestor to the Total War series..
I love both the Fire Emblem and the Advance Wars series, and I wouldn't really recommend Expeditions: Conquistador...the game has an interesting premise, but I couldn't get into the micromanagement you have to do every few steps while exploring the map. The battles were pretty screwed up as well: enemies could travel the whole map in 2 turns, were stronger than me early on AND had more troops. I tend to prefer mission-oriented games over those which give you more freedom to explore, that might have something to do with me not enjoying the game as well (in other words: HoMM mission style >>> KB exploration style, at least for me)

Master of Orion 2, Alpha Centauri, Eador (either is fine), Disciples 2, HoMM 3 and King of Dragon Pass are the best TBS games on GOG.

Keep in mind KoDP is text-driven, so it's quite different from the others.
There is also Blackguards, mrkgnao spoke highly of it:

"Finally, I am playing now Blackguards. I am in chapter 3 (of 5) and if it continues this way to the end, this is going to be my #1 PC video game of all times! It is that good, surpassing all the others listed above. "

I bought it but i haven't played it yet.

Hmm... interesting. I did not know about these ones.
Note to self: check out these games. Thank you for the tip, Licurg.

I will also take a look at Blackguards, Cyraxpt.

Ultra_DTA: I'm new to older PC games for the most part. I'm a huge fan of console turn based strategy like Advanced Wars and Fire Emblem. What titles like that are available on GoG that you guys would recommend? Thanks in advance.

Ultra_DTA: I don't mind if the game is new or indie.
In that case, I very much recommend Halfway.
Imagine a 16bit streamlined version of XCOM without base management. I'm a huge fan of the Advance Wars series and I quite enjoy the Fire Emblem series, as well. Halfway definitely tickled that "console turn based strategy" bone. It's unfortunate that only very few people have tried the game so far.

KoDP is very hard to get into, but stick with it, it's more than worth it .
Deadlock is cool.
Not sure about that KoDP recommendation, i'm sure it's a good game but is it really what is being asked here? Does it even have combat (besides the text decisions)?

And yes, it's hard to get into, i had no idea of what i was doing so i quitted, gonna give it another try when i have more patience for it.
Can't have a turn based thread without a Xenonauts recommendation.

Ultra_DTA: Interesting. Thanks. I'm downloading Wesnoth at the moment.
This also got my interest now, it was worth to check out your thread :)

It's one of those games where you MUST read the manual before playing, including the gameplay, the lore and the mindset of the fantasy people you'll be guiding. Even the tutorial itself is in the manual.

And It probably my favorite game.
But you're right, it's not really the type of games the OP was talking about. That's the reason I didn't mention it in my own post. I'm not even sure it's a strategy game, nor an empire building game. It's rather unique : a true barbarian tribe simulator :)

Well, it can't be any worse than Dwarf Fortress. :-P
(still working on that...)
Just to recommend panzer general2 again, plus combat mission beyond overlord.
