So, Humble posted Banner Saga for their bundle and it got me thinking. I really dislike turn based games. However, I am a huge fan of RPGs, so I feel like I should like it b/c, well, history.

Am I not understanding some element that makes it enjoyable? Is there some game that might change my mind?

If anything I guess list your favorite and I'll look it up and maybe try it.

Fallout 1&2
I was in the same place and those two games changed my mind.

However that is for the rpg genre. More generally I am only aware of one medicine for your affliction : Civilization.

Really? Fallout 1 &2 are turn based? I didn't know. I got it as part of a bundle, I will try it out, thanks!

Main reason for TB is that you can take your time to plan your move (and the next, and the 5 after that) and not rely on reflexes to get the best result.
Be aware though that Turn Based also has quite a few subsets, mainly fixed order and team order.
Fixed order means that unit A acts first, then unit B, then unit C, then unit D, no matter what sides they are on. Team order means that all units of Team A act first, then all units of Team B, then Team C etc. Some times you must finish moving a unit before using another, other times you can move your fighter to the side, cast a fireball with your wizard, then charge back in with your fighter, who has avoided the fireball damage and can still deal his in melee range.

So no, TB/RT is not something that will make or break a game. It's a system that can be excellent or suck donkey balls, and it does depend a lot on the rest of the game.

Uhuh you move around in realtime with the game switching to turn-based in a combat situation. I never played the game when it came out as I pretty much dismissed it immediately when I found out it had turn-based combat. I played the game a good 10-12 years at least after it came out (so there was no nostalgia) after I had already played the likes of neverwinter, diablo and oblivion. Nevertheless I quickly decided that it was the best rpg I had ever played, and it still is. Of course it helps if you are into the mad max-esque post apocalyptic atmosphere :)

Maybe then it was that I just picked up some bad games. I wish I could remember what game(s) it was that soured me, but it was sooo long ago. Thanks for posting about not having "rose tinted glasses" on. I'm always worried about that when reading reviews for the older games. I remember when I rebooted myst after years and was about to bash my head in b/c it was sooo slow compared to today's standards.

XD It's funny how we sometimes dislike things for no good reason. Take me for example : I despised Star Wars for no good reason when I was a kid based solely on how much people talked about it and the episodes' VHS covers in the local videostore (yeah kids VHS, google it) Also I coulnd't understand why the deathstar was intact on the cover of Episode IV but seemingly still under construction on the cover of Episode VI :P Nevertheless I became a fanboy around 1999-ish (so much so that I even really like Episode I)

Btw, perhaps the community can (or one member of it :P )get you into a TBS gateway drug. Actually its not much of a gateway drug because the awesomeness of Disciples 2 ends with it I'm afraid.

I never used to care much for turn based either, but then played things like Fallout, Temple of Elemental Evil (brilliant TB mechanics), Arcanum (although you can choose to play in real-time for the battles, turn-based is the only way to play it, IMO), the Eschalon series, Avadon, and am currently having a blast with Expeditions:Conquistador (turn-based battles). I'm quite looking forward to Divinity:Original Sin and Torment:Tides of Numenera, a couple of turn-based kickstarter games that I backed.

It was 2 different Death Stars. Luke blew the first one to hell so they immediately started construction on the other which Lando blew to hell, though he wouldn't have been able to had Han and Leia not taken out the shield generator on Endor which they never would have been able to do without a bunch of dwarves dressed up as bears. Following me?

Tell you what, if the gates to hell open suddenly then I come to your house and you provide the swords and the red health potions. If however the world turns into a post apocalyptic wasteland with rampaging mutants and zombies then you come to my house and I provide the shotguns and black leather jackets.
