KasperHviid: I did a GoG Mix where I picked some interesting looking turn-based games:
Truly original turn-based! NO rpg or warfare boredom!

yyahoo: What was the reason that you excluded the HOMM games? And Hotline Miami? That game is so fast I can't get anywhere on it...
My GoG mix looks at that are something other than rpg/warfare! So HOMM gets excluded. About Hotline Miami ... the reason I found that game worth mentioning is that it kind of plays like if it was turn-based: The majority of the gameplay consist of waiting and planning your moves. The real-time action hardly takes more than a few secs!

amok: you know.... that housekeeper......

tinyE: That would be funny if I ever had a housekeeper IRL. :P So I had one in The Sims and I had an affair with her and thus had to fire her....that was a game people!
Fire huh? That's what I do to my Sims once a while, burn them to death.

Umm, okay. I don't understand your reasoning on either point, but heck, it's your mix, so your reasoning is the only thing that's important...
while I write this, S2: Silent Storm Gold Edition is on sale on the front page.

(but most likely gone when anyone reads this)

Turn based? It has grid based movement, but it's real time. If you sit doing nothing, the enemy will still attack (and kill you).

P1na: Seriously, the AI back then sucked. Why would someone stop leaving on the grass?

Also, where was the electricity for the phone coming from?
I think I gave them one of those old telephones that doesn't need to be plugged into an outlet :)

Crewdroog: Am I not understanding some element that makes it enjoyable? Is there some game that might change my mind?
The fun comes from planning your moves in advance, evaluating everything that might happen for the possible things you can do. Calculating what the best option to take is.

thank you for the clarification, I made a mistake includes both generes on the same.
I am no expert in the TBS field, but I tend to enjoy the genre. Recently I have started playing Incubation and I am greatly enjoying it, very tense and gripping. Other turn-based games I like very much are those of the Age of Wonders series (I'm not talking about the last one, which I've not tried). Years ago, a friend and I spent many a night playing them. Heroes of Might & Magic 2 is another cherished title. And I played Space Crusade to death on my old Amiga, it was one of my favourite games back then and I finished all the missions; unfortunately I never got the expansion disk.
I have never played X-COM, JA, HoMM3, S2, but I am going to rectify that in the near(?) future. I would also like to try out Space Hulk, WH40k: Chaos Gate, Laser Squad(*), and others, but sadly they are not (legally) available anywhere.

(*) the spectrum version is indeed available on World of Spectrum, which has obtained permission fron the author, Julian Gollop. Does anyone know about the status of other versions? I would like to play the C64 version, it is declared freeware on a geocities.ws website but I don't know how reliable that is...

Crewdroog: ...If anything I guess list your favorite and I'll look it up and maybe try it.
Turn Based Games are great because you have absolutely no time pressure. I don't like this kind of pressure at all. And in contrast to real-time strategy it tends to be much deeper and less tactical or reflex-oriented.

For RPGs you partly want this time pressure effect because it adds to the immersion. I especially like the BaldursGate approach, i.e. real-time but with a pause function that works at any time. Second best is the Witcher system where fights are basically a lot of action and doing the right thing at the right time but in between you can take your time as much as you want.

For Turn Based (Strategy) Games just imagine you are the general of an army and while your troops fight you have plenty of time to think about the best moves but in any case they will decide about life or death.

My favorite turn based strategy game is probably Alpha Centauri which you can get from here.

To join the late fray discussion, turn-based systems happen to be one of my favourite way to play games. To give just 2 games as examples would be an injustice but I'll do it with 2 of my favourite turn-based games: the original X-COM and Jagged Alliance 2.

In the original X-COM, every turn u take might be the last for your unlucky troopers. The turn-based gameplay in itself adds atmosphere and tension to the game like none other. Especially when you see a Chrysalid creeping around in the darkness on the enemy's turn. Then when it reaches your turn, you prance frantically getting your troopers ready for the alien assault to your best ability but things don't always go smooth.

In Jagged Alliance 2, I had a particularly interesting battle where I actually planned things from the get go. Engaged the enemy troops with my main mercs while I sneaked 2 mercs up a building behind them. I had one of the mercs on the building throw a mustard gas grenade down from the building and all of the enemy troops below KOed, the other proceeded to take out the LAW, aimed and shot the round at the unlucky, unconscious bastards lying on the ground who are already suffering badly from the mustard gas.
king's bounty series
maybe commandos?
