Hello everybody. I am here in Hawaii, the Tsunami is still coming... doesn't seem that bad right now. They are saying waves can keep coming all day especially due to aftershocks.
Anybody in a Pacific Island, worried about Tsunami?

I heard about the Earthquake in Japan Yesterday - Is this a result of the quake?

Nope, there was an 8.8 in Chile. Every Island in the pacific is on watch for Tsunamis.
Holy Cow!! I just checked the news and I see Chile has been struck by an 8.8 - This must be what is causing the Tsunami you are refering too.
Hoyl Shat that's freaking huge. record is like 9.4
Austrlia's east coast is on alert, but probably just a few smaller waves
Hope noone gets badly hurt...Hope you're okay too!
If i remember correctly from my geology, the Nazca plate is subducting under the South American plate, so there's been an earthquake after a brief seismic shock...
Thank you
I think everyone is okay. It seems to have hit now. They were predicting 12- 14 feet but kept downgrading it. It seems like it was only a foot or two. By the time it reaches Japan and Australia should be nothing .
Those poor people in Chile... and Haiti for that matter...

Chile produced the largest magnitude earthquake in recorded history, around 9.4-9.6 on the Richter scale. My sympathies to anyone there....
I knew of this today but only in the afternoon. Got shocked when heard it was a 8.8 in Chile, since in Haiti it was 7.0 or so.
Yes there is only one big plate in south america, and the border of one plate with another is just this little thing, where Chile is located. The last I've heard is ~150 victims in Chile, I don't know about the other countries though.
I was worried if it would hit the french polynesia and other smaller islands, along with Hawaii.
Hope everything goes all right there in Hawaii, for you too Cor. ;)
8.8? Holy crêpes, I thought the scale went to 10 and was logarithmic, with typical "nasty" quakes scoring about 7?
Hope not too many got hurt.
We are all good. It looks like it is over. Only small waves thus far, no real property damage, no power outages, phone and internet still on. can't get better than that.

Exactly
The tsunami is still due here in Japan, with waves between 1 and 3m high expected. First it will strike on northern part of Honshu (the main japanese island), then Hokkaido, Shikoku, Kyushu and Okinawa.
I live in Osaka, deep in the Inland Sea, so the tsunami should strike us a little later in the day, and not so strongly of course.
Still, I'm happy to live in Japan, a country that is quite well-prepared for such catastrophic events.
All my thoughts to people in Chile, and to the people of Robinson Island, who seem to have been strongly affected by the tsunami (there is no news for the moment of a french submarine archeology team who was exploring a 15th century boat wreck there...)
"The tsunami warning for Hawaii was cancelled at 1:38 p.m. Waves
generated by an 8.8 magnitude earthquake near the coast of central Chile
began to impact Hawaii at 11:20 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27.
Some coastal areas may continue to experience small sea level change and
strong or unusual currents lasting several hours, so continue to observe
county Civil Defense and police department instructions for your area."

fyi the nazca plate is off the coasts of peru, it's nowhere near the earthquake's epicenter.

And chile is right under Peru, and close to the subduction zone
