I just downloaded Riven from GOG.com and I finally got the game to work on my Windows Vista computer. No crashes, no glitches, and I can now play one of my favorite games.

One problem, though; I can't figure out how to save a game. When I go to save, there isn't anything for me to really do. I can't type anything, and all I see are a couple of folders to click on, but nothing much happens.

Am I missing something here? All I want to do is save my progress so I don't have to start each game from scratch. Once I get this bug figured out, I can start playing this game.

Vista and Windows 7 are very similar.

After clicking on "Save as..." in the upper menu you should be able to type a name for the savefile and after that clicking on the "Save" button should create the savegame and immediately return you to the game.

If that's not happening check the compatibility settings on your shortcut.

For instance, for me (Win7 64) in Riven's case i have:

-Run as Admin
-Disable visual themes
.Win98/ME compatibility

Sorry to post on an old thread but having exhusted all possibilities I stll cannot "save as" a game in Riven.

I have tried UAC Off when Installing, on and off for game play. Created a new UAC user, tried every compatibily mode, turned off Visual Themes, run as admin, turned off Antni Virus etc etc and still no joy. I followed the suggestions on your Support section under Riven too. An dofr the recond I have had this game from GOG for over two years and never was able to "save as".

I read on another forum that creating a new Folder in Program files and copying everything over except the data file and then to make a new Data file in the new folder and copying the contents of the old data folder in to th new Data folder allows me to "save as" but then all the animations don't work after starting the gane again. So that soloution did not have the desire effect. I am at a loss to why if others can solve this.

Has anyone got any other ideas to try.

Have you tried installing it in c:\riven f.e rather then c:\program files?

I don't know if I understood you correctly, but if you have installed it under Program Files, you would do much better by trying another folder. For that matter, with Windows Vista and 7, anything but Program Files is a good choice. Even with UAC off, that particular folder is protected for some reason, preventing changes to game files. This is why modern games usually put their saves into the User folder.

And this is why you should avoid Vista folks! :)

Aren't Myst & Riven going to be added to a future SCUMMVM version? If/When that happens, that will prolly solve any Vista saving issues.

LOL That is one thing I didn't try but I will now...and what annoys me the most is that I know this and don't generally install programs to Program Files. face plam time. I will report back when I have tried it, Thanks for the speedy reply. Tell me about it but I am stuck with it until next year.

You do that. Program Files really is useless for anything except Microsoft programs from Windows Vista onwards. I have a "C:\Games" and a "C:\Apps" folder where I install all my stuff.
