Between those two, Torchlight. Diablo 2, though a masterpiece of sorts, hasn't aged all that well.

However, I'd rather go after either Titan Quest or Sacred 2 than either of those, at least until D3 or Torchlight 2 release.
I'd actually recommend Titan Quest, which can be currently bought from Gamersgate (or Steam) for $20. It's a very well-done take on the action-RPG genre, and the numerous class combinations make for good replay value (even though the maps are static). Highly recommended from one who's played quite a few action RPGs.
Haven't played D1 or D2 much, but Torchlight gets boring after one hour. It is the same thing, basically, I only used 1, yes, you read that right, 1 skill throughout the whole game.

There are like 3-4 questlines available, 1 is find item X, 1 is kill enemy X, 1 is a random dungeon that offers a quest to get item Y, and 1 is the main questline that basically says go forward and kill everything in your way.

Boooooooooooooooooring.
Torchlight is sort of Diablo 2.5. It borrows heavily (heavily!) from Diablo 2 in regards to gameplay and interface. Then it adds some features which are nice, and some features which are entirely pointless. It has a lot less content that Diablo 2, and while the story and cutscenes in Diablo 2 were fantastic and really drew you into the game, the story in Torchlight is very shallow and won't make you care at all. Also, in my experience, the game is rather unbalanced, the difficulty wavering all over the place, and if you have invested your points in the wrong skills, the final battle is impossible. Of course, the game gives you no hints about what skills are the right ones.

Generally, I found Torchlight to be a disappointment, not because it's a bad game (it isn't), but because it had the potential to be a much better game than it actually was, if only a bit more work had been done on it.

Honestly, the cut scenes added very little IMHO to Diablo 2. And seriously, the story? Diablo 2 had a plot line so vapid that it would make the writers at iD blush. OK, that's an exaggeration, but I've played FPS games with better plot than D2.
I'll check into this Titan Quest then. Is it very old? Cause if it's too new I don't know if my laptop can run it very fast.

2006 I think.

Yes, according to wikipedia June 2006.

The system requirements are fairly low at: 1.8 GHz. Processor, 512 MB RAM, 5 GB free HD space, NVIDIA GeForce 3/ATI Radeon 8500 or higher.

Okay, I'm downloading the demo now.
Honestly, as much as I like Torchlight, I would try to get Diablo 1 + 2 if I were you. Those two are damn good games - the first one is amazingly atmospheric and the second one does everything right.

Also, Torchlight is much more sandbox-y than the Diablo games and has much less actual content. But if you decide to buy the Diablos and you like them, get Torchlight as soon as you can afford to - it's well worth the price.

Edit: Oh yeah, I'd also like to recommend Sacred. It's hack-n-slash meets the open world RPG genre, with beautiful 2D background graphics. The gameplay is not on top, but the game is pretty unique and fun to play to make up for it. If that sounds like something you'd like, be sure to give it a go sometime.

It is not like Torchlight has a better 'story'. :)

Well no, the entire genre is lacking in that department. I just think it's a bit much for people to go on about a plot that's virtually non-existent and a story that's just there to serve expository information between switching between scenes.
Torchlight is good but Diablo has more lore and a better world. Torchlight has a lot of refinements that Diablo could do though such as having a pet that can take loot back to town and sell it for you (don't know how a pet can sell stuff and get a good deal but it means you can dungeoneer longer.) As people have said though the best of the batch is Titan Quest plus the expansion (Immortal Throne) as you don't choose a class, you choose 2 which allows you to make some interesting blends. The graphics are good and the areas are quite interesting.
Torchlight is a popcorn game - fun for a while, then starts getting really repetitive.

Diablo games are far better IMO, though the graphics have aged quite a lot.

At this point I'd recommend Titan Quest Gold.

Am I really the only person ever that strongly disliked Titan Quest and found it incredibly boring?
