jefequeso: I never played Diablo 1
You must correct this travesty. Diablo was far more iconic than Diablo 2. I'm not even kidding, you must experience this game, it was the perfect storm that launched an entire subgenre and captured the imaginations of the entire gaming community (such as it was at the time). Look, if you literally cannot find a copy for sale, shamelessly, er, get a backup copy. Diablo is one of the things we're talking about when we talk about gaming culture.

Buy it, play it, you won't be sorry (maybe plug in a shitty mouse when you do).

Tormentfan: Torchlight definately (if I actually buy one of them at all).. D3 has far too much BS attached to it.

D2 is last I'll ever play anything of Blizzard..

TCMU2009: That;s so weird. Everywhere else I look-- IGN, Gametrailers, Game Informer, PC Gamer, etc.-- people are clamoring for Diablo 3. But here, on a classic pc games centered website, everyone is saying it looks like garbage. There's a statistical study in here somewhere...
Well there's one main difference between gog users and mainstream players..... we're not all newness and graphic whores..... gameplay, without stitching you into garbage, intrusive playing methods, is prime.
There's a lot of people visiting this thread who are obviously passionate about A-RPGs, so I'd like to take the chance to mention KULT: Heretic Kingdoms. It's one of the lesser known gems of the genre, and it's definitely worth checking out. Seriously, if you've never heard of it do look up some info and/or videos - worst case scenario you don't like it. Getting hold of a copy is a bit tricky nowadays, I think the cheapest and easiest way would be ordering it from Amazon.de.
Yes, I have quite enjoyed KULT (and even without local patriotism :) ), one Czech gaming magazine gave it for free a few years ago.

The healing system was interesting, but on the other hand later I got bored and I have not finished it.

the_bard: Is this a game?... or some kind of foreboding prophecy?
Yes,
as others have replied to you, it's a game, aka Titan Quest 2.

Starkrun: so sad that no one knows of Grim Dawn..... Crate has been churning out quality shots concepts and working hand in hand with the community to make the definitive dark dungeon crawler...

Grim Dawn is my first pick but out of T2 or D3.... its T2 no questions, they have better system, there fully random gen except the overworld towns and its designed like D2 was and i already know the formula was fun and amazing.... plus default support for mods unlike D3 which you cant even use singleplayer mods or cheats or anything...

D3 is crap, over 7 core elements axed so it can be "released" in a timely manner (thanksactivision) so what ever.... T2 all the way!
Yeah it's sad not many people know it's being developed... I don't know much about Torchlight 2 though, don't know what areas it will improve other than having multiplayer.

You said a key word for me, of what I like in this genre: dark.

orcishgamer: When people talk about loving D2 for the atmosphere I have to admit I'm a bit nonplussed, Diablo had way, way more atmosphere to me. The music alone could give you nightmares.
Agreed.

Diablo 1 was the first *clicky clicky* game I've played, and the atmosphere in it is unbeatable IMO. Whereas D2 had a much more developed story and even books published, D1 had a much better mood, dark, horror, medieval theme.

That's why I disliked most of the media published about Diablo 3... it has lost that dark, eery atmoshpere. I recognize they towned it down from the last footage I've seen, but still to me it seems as they mixed D2+WoW.

Didn't knew that game, thanks for presenting it to us.

what about Inquisitor by Cinemax? do you guys recommend it?

I can recommend it. But not for action but for story. It is really text-heavy. It is more Planescape(adventure with fights) than Diablo.
So is there a copy of Diablo I could find somewhere that will work on Windows 7? Cause if not, I'll probably just wait for a Torchlight sale or until I get a new computer this summer and play T2 or D3.

Diablo 1 works on Windows 7. Just make sure to install it outside of system-wide folders, run it as admin, and with 98 / ME compatibility.

Just got into D3 beta. Played for about 3 hrs. Gameplay is rock-solid. Nothing new, but for any ARPG'er, that's not a bad thing. Graphics suck though. I mean, I was shocked at how crappy they look. Now I'm talking raw graphics. Because mood, design and spell effects were very, very awesome. Don't know if they're better than Titan Quest, but graphically, Titan Quest, from 2007 is a more graphically beautiful ARPG so far. In fact, from what I've seen and played so far, I think I'll keep playing the beta, but I don't know if I'm going to buy the game right when it comes out. I know I'll probably get hammered for saying it, but Dungeon Siege 3 had better graphics and had a more fun and challanging combat system than D3 so far. Maybe things will get better, but at this point, I'll wait for a battlechest version after an expansion or 2.
Does anyone know anything about Divinity 2? It's a direct sequel to Divine Divinity and was made by the same company. It just came out last year.

Thanks, I may play it then for the story.

kind of a dumb reason but snatch the Diablo 2 battle chest up... its Diablo, the guide, D2 and Lord of Destruction in a bundle...

D1 is amazing, Kings Sword of the Heavens and Godly Plate of Whale FTW! dont forget about the obsidian circlet! If your a Linux guy D1 installs fine on Linux though "PlayOnLinux" just use Wine 1.2 and your golden

Unfortunately for some reason new editions of the Diablo Battlechest no longer include the original Diablo game, just Diablo 2, the expansion and guides. I am certain of this as I just bought a Battlechest. The same is true for the downloadable edition available directly from Blizzard. I don't know why they chose to pull the first game out. I was disappointed by this as I wanted to revisit the original I had so much fun with years ago.
are you kidding me? that's stupid it runs fine on modern hardware too..

just for that I'm going to install hellfire and blow some devil worms up!
Torchlight II website just got revamped. Nice one.
