I disliked Diablo 1 and liked Diablo 2 but liked Torchlight. If Diablo 1 was updated with modern features, made a lot less serious in tone and had no multiplayer it would be Torchlight.
Picture Diablo but with more colour and more amusement.

It's also HIGHLY moddable, which is a great thing.

I'd recommend it, however, Torchlight II is coming out relatively soon, bigger and badder, and it has multiplayer (with 50+ players possible in theory, due to mods).
I found that Torchlight started off fun but got repetitive quickly.

DodoGeo: Only bad thing would be that it's easy, start playing at least on hard.
I agree . I played on normal and I had fun for awhile, but then I just started getting bored because there was no challenge at all. It was basically just click on the enemies to attack and kill them
I also found the whole character build thing a little too free form.. great in concept but poor in execution.

I found myself more than once wishing for a more diablo2 / wow -esque system of "you need to invest 5 skillpoints into the level 1 tier to train in the next level".

My builds were always terrible, and I never beat the game. Good fun though. Running the game on perma-death always kept things interesting.
I tried the demo, and although I loved having a dog companion, I really don't like real-time strategies, or dungeon crawlers. I much prefer turn-based, since with real time, I feel like all I do is click and have no say on what happens, unlike real time. I think I'll pass on this one. :/
i was rly satisfied with graphics..played once untill beated finall boss.. then lonf forgotten game..
then much later tried few times to play again.. charms werent strong enough...
id better stick with sacred or diablo or other rpg but not with torchlight as value game..
Very fun, but it brickwalls terribly in the Black Palace area. From killing everything with my kill laser in two seconds, to have said kill laser do GLANCING HITS against everything and my minions hacked to pieces by random mobs.

Yeah I like the game, but not that area. Waiting anxiously for Torchlight 2 and co op dungeon crawling.

Torchlight is totally worth it for the current discounted price at gamersgate or D2D, 5 bucks or so.

I liked Torchlight and paid fullprice ($20 USD) for it to support the devs, who are from the original Blizzard North team as well as Travis Baldtree who developed Fate.

It was good for what I expected, but it's not deep nor is it complex. It's good for one playthrough unless you play Hardcore Very Hard.
The game is awesome, I would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a dungeon crawler fix. All the classes are fun, too. Even the warrior class never felt monotonous, which I find usually happens in games like this.
I am rather partial to Torchlight myself -- heck, I reinstalled Steam after my OS crash JUST SO I COULD PLAY IT.

Like a lot of others have said, though, it's Diablo 1.5. The overall feeling of it lies somewhere between Diablo and Fate, since it steals most of the vibe from the former while the overall story and gameplay progression is rooted directly in the latter, which was heavily rooted in the former... regardless, it's a fun game, though I would have preferred if the graphics were a little less WoW-esque.

I agree with it being easy though. I NEVER play games on Hard, and I've been considering starting a new char at that level just to toughen things up a bit.

tomimt: Is Torchlight any good? It seems to be Diablo style game so that in mind, I really enjoyed the first Diablo but I hate Diablo 2 with a passion.
It's made by a lot of folks who worked on D2. It's a pretty close Diablo 2 clone. With that said, for the price you can probably obtain it for these days, sure it's fun, it was 20 dollars at launch and that was about what it was worth. There was a pretty hefty editor bundled with it, not sure it got as many fan made goodies as they probably deserved given that (there is a good amount, check it out).

The core gameplay after the main story is lackluster. You might replay once as that other class you almost picked before, that's about it for most folks.

Hard just means you drink more potions, that's pretty much it. If you can bequeath some high value items for sale on your hard character they will have no money issues early on buying potions.

Ditto. I think also that some of the abilities were way too powerful and that you had to at times choose a less than optimal skill otherwise it would get even more repetitive. It wasn't a bad game, I just ended up losing interest and not finishing it because of the repetition.

But it is pretty and it is fun, hopefully Torchlight 2 will be less repetitive.

Pretty much this. It was a clickfest, nuff said. Pretty as hell though.

I should load it up again, but I think one of the problems was that I played an an Alchemist and there were those abilities which basically did the fighting for me, making it that much less interesting to play. Sort of like Diablo as a Necromancer except without the need for killing anything first..
