So I've been bumbling my way through Veteran mode (currently at level 40), and yesterday I tried turning the map off (Ctrl-M). For me this seems to improve the experience dramatically.

I've realized that I was spending as much time focusing on the map as on the environment, and exploring was more a matter of steering the arrow towards the blank spaces on the map than it was trying to keep track of paths and landmarks.

And the element of surprise was lessened by the fact that monsters invariably pop up when you enter unmapped territory. Now I'm not quite as sure whether I'm in a safe zone or not., so I'm a bit more alert.

With the map off the whole thing just feels a lot more immersive, which for me more than makes up for some time spent wandering around and retracing my steps.

Makes me think that my ideal setup for a game like this would be a an automap that you can only look at when not moving.

(Now if there were only some way of removing the stars for quest objectives from the map, I'd be really happy.)

Minecrafts map is like this. You need to stop and look at the actual map (your char is holding it, so it only works in first person also). The automap also only fills out the map if you have one with you in your inventory.
Wish TL2 had an online-only character storage like Diablo 2, local saves are killing the multiplayer.

I haven't much played online but I suspect it's more for those times when you want to play with friends, not randoms.

I agree. It would be nice to have that as an option. Sort of like how some games have servers that don't enforce cheat rules and some which do. Allows for folks to play the game the way that they want to.

Either way as long as single player and LAN only games are possible, I don't personally care.

Out of curiosity, how? All-legendary PVP gear on cheaters?

I would suspect they have max levels in all stats as well as several other things. Anything the other client won't outright reject they probably have.
I haven't been following since their first "all releases will have DRM" forum posts. Have they said anything about a DRM-free release yet?

There was a post on the Runic fora about somebody that was spawning bosses left and right and sicking them on unsuspecting players.
Found my first legendary for real this time about a week ago:

Turns out to be a pistol which I have no use for since I don't have a Outlander alt but I have all the rest.

Reached level 100 on my mage, currently at NG++ and thinking of toning it down to Veteran instead of Elite, ranged mobs now start doing at least 8000 to about 13k dmg a shot or spell, and always 1 shots me when I have only 8000+hp. Didn't have much problems with NG+ but starts going crazy with ++.
