Wishbone: So which is it? Is it "Log on if you want to play multiplayer" or is it "Log on if you want to play at all"? There's rather a big difference, you know.
avatar
amok: you need to log into the launcher if you want to use it, but it can be by-passed by starting the exe directly. When the game runs, you have the option to log into your runic account. If you do not do so, you can only play SP, if you want to play MP you need to log into the account.

So, you do not need to log in at all if all you want is to play SP. However you need to log into something if you want to fetch the latest patches or if you want to play MP.
So again, how is that different from Age of Wonders 3? http://www.gog.com/forum/general/torchlight_2_ever_coming_to_gog/post41

Honest question.
Half of this thread is about DRM and the other half is about what constitutes copyright infringement when dealing with a brain parasite.

Why do we even need schools!? We have this forum! :D

I don't know? I do not have AoW 3, so I am not sure if I understand the question.

edit - by what you are saying there, it is probably the same?

I don't have to login to the launcher though. The launcher updates the game without login. When I start the game from the launcher for the very first time after installation I get a prompt to enter and verify the CD-key which is anonymous. After the key is verified the game does not need online capabilities, not even the launcher. Multiplayer access and launcher updates need to be online for obvious reasons of course and multiplayer only also needs an Runic account.

I think it is quite an unintrusive DRM, apart from the activation limits a key has, but as Tiny mentioned these should be able to get revoked easily by asking Runic. Better than Steam anyway because it is anonymous, does not need a separate client and does not need an account for single player.

That's what I'm wondering, if the case is the same actually - afaik, in both cases one needs an online account to access multiplayer. Perhaps somebody that is very familiar with both cases can point to an actual difference.

In any case I sent them an email at contact@runicgames.com

bioshark: I am really wanting to play Torchlight 2, but I don't know how much time I should wait for it to come to GOG, if it will ever come here.

Currently it's on summer sale on Steam for just under 5 -Euro, but my conscience doesn't let me make this step, knowing that there is a possibility for it to arrive on GOG.

What to do...what to do....
I definitely don't want to sell my soul to those vampires...

Arghmage: To save your conscience you could buy the non-steam-version directly from the programmer. It's standing there at 9.99$ - that should be 7.50€.
Could be a solution, yes :)
I am still deliberating. The Steam sale will still be on for 22 more hours....

hedwards: Why would Valve have any right to the headcrab? They didn't originate the idea, it's basically something they ripped off from the Alien franchise and I'm not even sure if that was an original idea back then.
avatar
ubernerdlucas: Because it's not a general alien brain parasite, it's specifically the headcrab from the Half-Life series. For an analogy, 'space marine' is a general concept idea, but if you want to use the Space Marines from W40K, you need Games Workshop's permission first.
The head crab is a face hugger, as depicted in the movie Alien. So, I say again, why is it that Valve gets to license somebody else's IP?

Yes that's exactly the same thing , if you got the game from Runic website.

Indeed, the only reason why brain parasites are a problem is that schools don't adequately prepare us to deal with such dangers.

I would argue that a face huger is not a brain parasite at all. The closest you get is that both species are parasitic and both primary attacks humans via the head. However, that's all they have in common. A head crab takes over a person and uses them, while a face huger uses a body to incubate an egg. For a head crab, the head is important as it is the access to the brain, while for a face huger it is only because the mouth gives access to the chest and stomach. I do not think there is enough similarities in design or concept to say that there is any IP infringement.

True but it does deliver the parasite.

Of course the headcrab takes over the human while the face hugger just uses it which in turn may rule out the headcrab as being a parasite period.

All extremely pertinent differences. In addition, thought they have similar body structure, a face hugger has eight legs and a long tail for an averall scorpion-like appearance, while the headcrab's four legs on a square body make it seem, well, crab-like. Overall, their similarity is that they prey on the same fears.

Perhaps, but I don't think Half-life when I see the pet in TL2, I think Aliens and it's because that's where the references began.

Folks are entitled to their opinions, I just think that rewarding Valve for taking somebody else's idea and changing it just enough to slide past courts is something that we shouldn't be rewarding with their own IP rights.

I want to thank you for having a moral and an ethical stance and not rewarding DRM-enforcers with a purchase.

Sadly, it looks like we'll never get Torchlight 2. :(
