I am ok with that, but why not at least say something like "we are still working out the details on the boxed edition, and we will make it known before the game is released"?
However, I do not know where but reading the forums it seems like the digital download of the game will have limited installs, but I have no idea where that was said and so know nothing about it.
Ok.... I gave you all the information did you just skip my post?

Faithful: The game looks great, however, I have been unable to get an answer from the Torchlight staff if this game will have DRM or not.
It seems that it will carry limited activations and be on Steam, but it is still unknown if the boxed version will have DRM or not.
This one fact has caused me to doubt the developers and doubt if I will ever play this game or not since they seem resistant to simply answer the DRM question.

Limited activations?? Can you post a link for proof please? Will be buying from the developers site myself if I get it so Steam isn't a big deal.
I noticed they implied something about an unlock key via the announcements. To me it alludes more to something like Mount & Blade (own boxed copy; not sure about steam or D2D ones) where you get a key and enter it via the downloadable client to unlock the full game. Couldn't see an indie company tossing on any big name DRM which is why I am curious as to where you draw this conclusion about limited activations.

Here's one on their forums, with participation of the developers:
http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=687
A developer mentions limited activations on this post:
http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=687#p9416
There's no information about resetting activations or anything like it, but I guess we'll only really know when it's already out.

OK, correction this post mentions Limited Key Activations, or Unlock Keys not direct Activations, sorry, but I am still unsure what it means.
Just read the second post down in this Thread and then another nearer the bottom middle of page 1.
I wish developers would just say what they mean and mean what they say; it would be so much easier.

Limited unlocks...that's so lame. To me it's saying they don't think their game will be worth playing years from now.

No it says that the versions available at their own 2 digital distribution sites will *maybe* use something like this (its still not finalised, the number 10 was bandied about rather casually to be considered final just yet) to deter piracy a little bit. The steam version likely won't run out of unlocks since it has steam authorisation.
I agree its a hassle to keep track of unlocks but I'll probably still buy it with this limitation if only because I *want* the unlock serial number so I can download the MAC version of Torchlight later and use the same key (and hopefully transfer characters over). I doubt getting it from steam will be as convenient.

I know, but the fact they're even considering it...

Computers are still sold with region locked DVD players ~ like 4 options to change it unless you download an illegal firmware hack.
I have seen some schemes, and it was mentioned as a possibility on the runic forums where the number of unlocks resets over time. This seems like a fine idea to me and covers your ass in later years. Worst comes to worse if the game turns out a classic there's always a chance of a GOG re-release, DRM free...

Porkdish: Mentioned by the devs?
That would be acceptable.
Of course there will be a crack, too, which I imagine is partly why most devs don't see schemes like this as a huge deal.
Yes, this game is pretty much a guarantee on GOG as I see it.

It's still a potential headache. I had been considering this title, but currently have no interest until a no-strings-attached version is available. Basically the way this plays out in my mind is that it's a game from a fairly small unknown developer, that's not particularly heavy on content (estimated playtime is 10-20 hours according to the devs), and at $20 that's already about at the limit of what I'm ready to pay assuming I like the demo. Throw any kind of activation DRM nonsense into that mix and it's simply thanks but no thanks.

The part that bothers me is that the developers refuse to answer the DRM question that I asked in this Thread. I started to ask near the bottom of page 2.
Tell me, what is the risk of being honest?
Why not at least answer users concerns about DRM as best they can, and leave out the vague "maybe" there will be DRM "maybe" there won't; just say something like, "we have not decided, but we will let you know when we do".
I quickly lose faith in a developer that cannot/will not answer this question that is very important to many people.
Let me show you a developer that has no trouble answering the DRM question. Eschalon Book II DRM answer.
I know which one I will be buying when it is available.
Article on the wonderment that is Torchlight here.
Get the fuck over it people. It's a $20 fully moddable game. When I was interviewing them, they were incredibly nice and passionate about the game.
The game is good. Buy the game.
