Top games that don’t wear off quickly.

Today, 11 games from [url=http://www.gog.com/en/catalogue#all_genres/publisher/TopWare%20Interactive/]TopWare have their prices reduced by 50%. This also comes with another cool piece of news about a Topware game in our catalog: Earth 2140, the first part of a well-know strategy series, now comes with a special bonus content: a DOSBox version of the game with a more robust AI. If you like strategies, you’ll surely grab Earth 2150 and Earth 2160 to complete the set. Each of these RTSes is only $2.99.

Two Worlds: Epic Edition is an action RPG, which, as you’ve probably guessed, is epic. Action fantasy in a vast world with impressive visuals and advanced character development. The game includes two expansions: Tainted Blood and Curse of Souls and offers both almost complete freedom so many cRPGs miss nowadays and a loooooong game time for only $4.99.

Septerra Core is another RPG, but in a completely different setting -- Japanese RPG mixed with steampunk. Fascinating world design, wide cast of characters, and huge 100+ hours of gameplay only partly describe Septerra Core: Legacy of the Creator, which is only $2.99.

If you’d prefer some well-paced adventure, get Enclave, that offers simple hack-and-slash entertainment with a parade of diverse of environments from dark labyrinths, through town rooftops, to hellish wasteland. Enclave is pure action fun for only $2.99 on GOG.com.

That’s not all, because you can get Knights and Merchants, Dream Pinball 3D, Gorky 17, Jack Orlando: A Cinematic Adventure or Jagged Alliance 2: Wildfire, all for $2.99 each, only this weekend on GOG.com.

I own all Topware game except the pinball, but the fact that Earth 2140 got proper AI made my day. If only I could play it right now...
What are the opinions on Gorky 17 and Septerra Core? They look like decent RPGs but I'd like to get some thoughts if possible.
"Nice, you own all the games in this promo."

Better luck next time GOG.

I would hesitate to call Gorky 17 an RPG. It's more like a turn-based tactical strategy game (like Fallout Tactics or a more puzzle-oriented Jagged Alliance) that I found requires a lot of trial and error. It can be very unforgiving if you make a mistake early in the game. It also has a lot of puzzle and adventure elements.

Septerra Core is better, in my opinion. It plays like a traditional JRPG, with semi-turn-based battles, a large, sprawling plot, and mostly linear gameplay. The combat is fun without the depth of some of the later Final Fantasy games, the visuals are nice enough, and the writing is par for the course. It isn't ground breaking, but it's certainly good fun so long as you aren't looking for a Fallout-style game.

Both games have their fanbases that could probably tell a lot more than myself. :)

As for me, this sale was nice because it meant I grabbed a handful of games I'd never played. I even picked up Earth 2140, even though I don't normally care for RTS games, just because they added the DOS version, so kudos to you, GOG team!

Can't speak to Gorky 17, but I'd give Septerra Core a pass. I bought it when it was first released and still haven't finished it. The combat is really, really, really slow and there's a lot of "run around finding the next plot hook because you can't do much until you find it." On the plus side, it's pretty (still looks good!), story's not bad, characters are kinda fun. The idea behind the combat system's pretty good, it just takes forever to get through a battle, and there's lots of them.

I had been wondering about Gorky 17 for years as the screenshots looked pretty awesome back then but I didn't know anything about it. Several years ago I got it from a gaming magazine. I think it's quite a nice game but the combat is ridiculously hard and a bit weird as the weapons can only shoot in straight lines, only the better ones diagonally - this makes it almost a puzzle game. I'm used to challenging tactical games but Gorky goes a bit too far. In this genre I'd definitely rather stick to Incubation (which is available on GOG as part of the Battle Isle pack) which is also very challenging (and also something between a tactical and a logical game if you ask me) but still a lot easier and much more entertaining. Although Gorky does come along with some simple RPG/adventure elements, if I remember right, which makes it an interesting game.

As for Septerra Core: Disliking Japanese RPGs I always avoided it although several friends of mine loved it (I believe the game isn't Japanese but it's made in that style). I guess you should give it a try if you're into JRPGs - I'll probably also check it out myself in a while.

It IS a puzzle game. There isn't a single random battle/loot in it.

It's all about leveling up the melee weapons to preserve ammo and using rechargeable guns extensively. Also tactical use of stunning and weird weapon firing patterns is a must.
The game can be brutally hard on the first playthrough. On the second one you will come out of quite a few fights without taking a single hit or at least using meds.
This is great! Although I don't buy any games from this promo (as I already own the ones that interests me), but now I can download the Dos version of the Earth 2140.

Good idea, that's a very good point n' click adventure game, with an awesome soundtrack (and - at least for me - with an interesting story).
How is Septerra Core 100+ hours? I took my time and finished it in just under 60.

The best decription of Gorky 17 is that it is a TBS/Puzzle Resident Evil. Really, that sums it up pretty well.
Dream Pinball 3D isn't the best pinball game so I wouldn't advise getting that.
Only game here I don't have is the pinball one, and I.. don't think I need that.

Gawd, is it possibly I just have too many GOGs?
Surely not.

F4LL0UT: I already owned all games from the promo but the fact that the DOS version of Earth 2140 is available now is simply epic. GOG should delete all "do not buy" reviews that referred to the Windows port (including mine). Now it's a totally different story. Guess my new rating would be 4 stars.
+1 from me too. I want to edit my review, or do another one only this time I would now give the DOS version 5 stars! :D
