I found a pretty neat list of the top 10 hardest games of all time. Here's one game's description:

Shadowgate

Adventure games are notorious for cheapness, but classic Macintosh horror title Shadowgate pushes it to the limit.

As you traverse a haunted castle to defeat the Warlock Lord, you will die hundreds and hundreds of times. There are items in your inventory that if you even look at you will die.

It's absolutely ridiculous and has driven generations of gamers crazy.

...I want it >.>

EDIT: What's the hardest game you played and why?

I can easily see Dark Souls and Demons Souls added to this list

For best effect, wait for two minutes every time you reload, making whirring and clicking noises.

Uninvited was a similar game in a different setting. Just as annoying.
Sanitarium. I've been trying to finish it for over 5 months now, I'm stuck at chapter 5...
Dark Reign

GREAT TOPIC BTW! :D
I Wanna Be the Guy!

Yup, there it is!

edit:Mushihime-sama Futari

I thought that said..... something else at first.

I've played La Mulana, Ghosts n Goblins and Battletoads and yes, I consider them very hard game but not really rewarding. All I feel is relief of not having to play games like that and rage quitting is ten times as sweat as actually finishing them. Shadowgate sounds interesting, I'll wait for the kickstarter version though.
Most old school pc rpgs are the hardest games ever.

For me it's been Battletoads.

Some games might be hard but they're a cheap kind of hard, not the kind of hard gameplay that means you need to be a better ninja like in Ninja Gaiden Black. I don't care for the cheap shot games. I liked that Ninja Gaiden Black added an easy difficulty setting for casual players, but mocked them in-game if they chose it.

I do have fond memories of Shadowgate on the NES. Sometimes frustrating but it had great music and death descriptions. Sometimes it was fun to do something you know is stupid just to read the description. I once got stuck far into the game and gave up. I came back, I don't know, five years later and tried it again but solved the puzzle I had been stuck on before. Then I finished the rest of the game in about half an hour. Sometimes you just need to give a game a rest for a while and come back with a fresh mind.
Just remembered Felicia Day and her brother played Battletoads...they couldn't get very far, to say the least :D

Hard but fair: Commandos 1, 2.

Have I mentioned I finished Commandos 1 with perfect rating (3 gold stars on all 20 missions)? Awww yeah.

That's impressive, seriously. You must be the one person on the planet who has played those more than me. One day I'm going to pick them up here because my cd's are getting warped from over use.
I wanna play Shadowgate now.

I think it would be fun to play a game that starts out with ridiculously hard puzzles, which then become easier the farther you get in the game (with the occasional hard one to keep the rage of course). My reasoning for this is I am curious if people will get stuck on a very easy puzzle simply due to the narrow-mindedness which results from rage.
When I was a kid, the hardest game was the arcade game Dragon's Lair. I sucked sucked sucked at that game. That game sucked. Sucking at that game really sucked.

I hate it.

I hate everything.

That game was hard.

You suck.

Go away.

Difficulty to me is measured in not just wit and patience, but common sense. Having enough of those qualities a person can beat pretty much anything. If everyone kept a level head indefinitely in so called "hard games", they wouldn't be hard at all.

I often don't call any game hard, but such a game can be complex and time consuming to figure out the puzzles (to make progress and finish it even if that's just figuring out how NOT to die at every corner).

You sound like my brother when he was a kid.

All I'd hear form upstairs was lines like "RETARD FROG!", or "STUPID PENGUIN!", or simply crying and shrieking like he was being stabbed to death. Ah yes... gamer rage ;) Not as dangerous as road rage, but equally as headache inducing.
