Bands like DL, Quiet Riot, Scorpions I consider to be guilty pleasure metal:) Fun to listen to when partying but not bands I can sit and listen to on my own.

As for bands like Ax7 or whatever...

DEATH TO FALSE METAL.

And death to Weezer for using that phrase on their execrable record. They put some good tunes before the Green album. Not metal, I know, but I like 'em.

Ragnarblackmane: So for the first topic...what was your first metal show? Not counting seeing friend's bands in hs and playing in my own, it would be Lollapalooza '96 with Metallica headlining. That was back when they were really starting to forget their metal roots, but they still played their classic songs.
Metallica Damaged Justice tour '89 in Atlanta. Danzig, Queensrÿche, and The Cult opened. Awesome show!
My first live gig was Irish celtic progrock band Horslips

Dearg Doom

Total awesomesauce back in the day (1976)

Cyberevil: Hmmm Well considering the very FIRST thing that most people do to bitch about A7X is to say "They sound just like Metallica" I dunno... But really I don't care, it's just funny that D.L. is on that list... Maybe they should add Warrant.

darthspudius: Why not add Warrant. Good band with some heavy stuff you won't find on a greatest hits collection. Uncle Toms Cabin, what a tune!

Just because they have a reputation does not mean they aren't a good heavy metal band. Take Europe for example, 3/4 big hits in English speaking countries... all they're known for. Buy their albums and they're just as heavy as Judas priest, Iron Maiden etc. But you wouldn't think so buy The Final Countdown (despite the awesome guitar solo and galloping rhythms)

Despite how lame I think A7X are, their last couple of albums haven't been too bad. A big improvement!

Elmofongo: My friend if you do not know them, allow me to introduce you to Iced Earth:

darthspudius: Quite overrated. They've recorded like the same song 50 times. The Glorious Burden and Night of the stormrider are wicked albums though.
And their guitar playing is the most difficult to replecate to any developing guitarist.

My first metal concert was an Iron Maiden one and its still probably my favorite concert that ive gone to.
Im really more into the more classic metal bands (Maiden, Priest, and Sabbath) and also some progressive and like different metal such as Ghost BC and Savatage, the latter being my favorite band.

Im actually curious what defines metal, because if shoegaze and drone are considered metal, then why isnt (using Ragnarblackmane's example) Disturbed considered metal?

Because they suck?

RWarehall: My first...I saw a not very well known band called Metallica open for Ozzy Osbourne the summer before Cliff Burton died.
Cliff 'Em All! RIP Met's best bassist ever:/

And Elmofongo, I have heard and seen IE before, on one of their tours in 2000s.:)

I mean, sure, but that can be subjective. Not to mention that there are also metal bands that suck.

i always thought it was b/c they were more "pop" metal. dunno
To give you a serious answer ;):

Drone is based heavily on metal; the first Drone bands were people who'd been in doom and other similar bands, like Earth, Sunn0))), Om members being former or current members of more "metal" bands.

Same with the Shoegazers; they all have elements of Sludge, Doom, or Stoner metal, etc.
First: there's no such thing as "too much metal".....

First concert? Judas Priest 90/91 Painkiller tour with Annihilator as opening act. Bought a Priest shirt before the show startet, still managed to get to the front row. At the end of the show, it contained 7 holes grated in from the guardrail.

The title is related to the attached picture;) A friend of mine back in the day in a different city had that painted on the side of his van, even.

That sounds like a legendary show. I love both those bands, though haven't listened to either in too long. Just too much good metal coming out, at least imho.

I love Iron Maiden and Blind Guardian, are there new good bands with a similar style?
There`s something amiss with that Metal Archives site. The first band I searched for wasn`t known to them, yet surely Ministry is somewhere amongst the metal genre.

I`ll throw names at the site later, really upset their "list" ;p

In the mean time......

My first metal concert was a Scorpions show. My favorite shows: Maiden, Haggard, Amorphis & Anathema. Most memorable: Manowar. Most boring: Metallica during Death Magnetic tour.

My metal Spotify playlist (again).
