tinyE: You consider this alive? :P

Grargar: I actually do. He might be sad, but he's still alive.
Considering how much he punished himself in his younger days, he's in great shape.
Okay we are waaaaay OT now but I love this picture and love the genre. :D Besides, somehow I don't think Tommy would be too upset that we turned his memorial thread into a punk appreciation thread.

I saw Jimmy Paige on TV a few years ago and I was shocked that he was still a smart guy. He must have been fucking brilliant before all the drugs.

I'll admit, I'm not a big fan of punk at all. I just love the Ramones. :P

He's a damn clever bloke, in a sense he was a waste of talent.

Emob78: Sad. All the old punk icons are dying off. Weird too, I was just watching the Ramones documentary the other day. A few more years and all the famous musicians who actually played instruments will be gone.
avatar
hedwards: I'm actually shocked that any punk icons are still alive.
The Sex Pistols. They sacrificed Sid long ago in order to make their pact with the devil complete. They will live to be 100 year old sexless pistols with no more ammo.

Sid was in the band for a few weeks and they never turned his amp on. :P As soon as they recorded Never Mind the Bollocks they hired their old bass player to redo all of his parts. Shit, Stu Sutcliffe was a bigger part of the Beatles than Sid was the Pistols. XD

Sadly true. Sid was a walking PR gimmick. He would fit in just fine with Gaga or Beiber. He was just a little more rough around the edges. We can all thank Malcolm Mclaren for that bit of marketing genius.

But Tommy... he was the real deal, like all the Ramones. We're full of gimmicks these days, a bit short on rock gods.
Oh no, I have been a Ramones fan since I was very young. The first time I ever heard them was when I was about 3 or 4 sitting at my computer playing Space Invaders and 'Bonzo goes to Bitburg' started playing on the radio and I was a fan ever since. This is really sad news indeed :(. I had the the very good fortune to see The Ramones before Joey had passed away, and this news breaks my heart to hear. Many condolences to his friends and family, and when I get home from work I'll crack open a cold one and listen to a couple of their records. For some reason "Dropping Like Flies" by the Real McKenzies seems appropriate to throw in the mix too.

R.I.P. Tommy
I'll add a couple of my favorites...

Rest in Gabba Gabba Hey, Tommy :(
I honestly thought he was already dead.

What a shame, I'm not a big fan of the group but I always liked their stuff. RIP.
Since nobody has posted it yet, this is the first song that I ever heard from Ramones:
Pet Sematary
Mind you, I didn't know its name, nor that it was sang by Ramones till last year.

Yeah, they did a few tie-in songs. Hey, even the punks gotta eat.

They also did a theme song cover for Spiderman. We'll look the other way until the check is signed.

Sacrificed? Sid wasn't a real member of the band, Glen Matlock was the original Bassist and if you've seen the documentary all the living members of the band pretty much agree what a mistake that was. Sid was every bit as mad as his public persona was and was a part of why the band wound up collapsing.

AFAIK, Sid could barely play the bass and was mostly in there for the look.

I'd recommend watching the documentary as it's rather enlightening about what was going on behind the scenes.
