tinyE: No one here know how totally screwed up the United States is more than myself, but the title of the thread, whether intentional or not, makes it sound like the thread is a condemnation of the U.S. capital punishment system, as if executing innocent people is an American problem. What's more is that it's coming from someone who's country has produced such political sociopaths as Julius Caesar, Caligula, Nero, Benito Mussolini, and the Roman Catholic Church. Does that make what happened to Sacco and Vanzetti right and or justified? ABSOLUTELY NOT but I think before you start picking us apart for the skeletons in our closet you might want to consider fessing up the ones in your closet.

djranis: wow tinyE finally said something that has weight
Didn't he say somewhere that GOGs forum is the only forum he haven't been banned from? So maybe he feels more courageous now that he have been here for some time? ;)

I was actually trying to be as un-offensive and PC with that post as possible because in this case I really don't want to piss off anyone. I post a lot of other stuff that I'm much more careless and disrespectful with for the reasons you mentioned about my being comfortable here. Still, being a total prick can get to be old even for me so I'm trying to lighten up a little.

My vote is that GOG is rubbing off on you. :)

tinyE: Don't forget Morty and Betty Crocker.
I was appalled at first. But then I saw the Onion on the headline then I laughed hard. Well played Onion. I almost fall for it.

Also Onion used to release newspapers?

I don't know, I think they still do. I just go to their web page every day or two and read up there. Get 90% of my news that way. :P
To quote the Bum in Deus Ex
Our country 'tis of Thee, sweet land of Liberty. Of Thee I sing. Land where my fathers died! Land of the Pilgrim's pride! From every mountain side, let freedom ring! My native country, thee. Land of the noble free. Thy name I love.

Yes I DEMAND that you now reinstall Deus Ex :P

I love "my country/culture/ethics are better than yours" threads.
What's going on today? Lots and lots of heavy topics.

How about this: http://www.gog.com/forum/general/as_n_when_ya_numpties

jjsimp: No if you do it correctly. The bullet in back of the head is pretty damn cheap. Charge the families for the bullet and the burial or cremation fee. Have the other prisoners dig the grave. This humanely executing someone is what costs money.

AFnord: I'm trying to figure out how serious I should actually take your statement. I take it that you were just being a bit silly there?
I was being a little silly only about charging the family for the expenses (I have heard the Chinese do this). I am pro-Death Penalty for Mass-Murderers. Execution is costly when it is performed how we are currently doing it. How it should be done is very cheap and I could give a rat's ass how humanely it is done.

In all fairness, Caligula probably had syphilis rather than sociopathy.

I understand your point of view, there are crimes that deserve death penalty. On the other hand, a society denying to do so, emphasizes respect for life in general. It's a social argument not involving the convict or the victim.

How is not involving the convicts? It's a double-edged sword to show respect to life like that. You at the same time show respect to people who condone taking multiple lives.

What's this someone from the old world that is pro Death Penalty? You don't see that everyday.
Well, I wouldn't call a life sentence exceptional respect for the convict, but in someways also the offender is to be treated respectfully, no matter who.

When it comes to serial murderers, yes. We don't have the resources yet to redeem people like that which is the only argument to help criminals. Punishment is useless from a society's perspective, at least in a civilized one. Taking their lives is a precaution to save others, nothing else.
