I was doing my usual browse through the local pawn shop today when I was delighted to find an original Arcanum: Of Steamworks & Magick Obscura, with original case (no box or booklets sadly.)

The asking price was a pittance: $5. This has totally made my day.

It now takes pride of place next to my original Fallout 1 and Baldurs Gate II: Collectors Edition CD Cases.

This is the first time I have purchased an old physical PC game (I purchase old consoles / games all the time. Point in fact, I also picked up a PSone today for $20. Its so small, white and cute! Oh and Tomb Raider 2 to keep it busy..)

Has anypony else got some GOG rescue stories ?

I lol'ed at that.

Last year I rescued Siege of Avalon for $4 (no booklet, no box either).
I would love to have an experience like this; unfortunately, I don't get out enough and used game stores seem to be ceasing to exist.
This isn't quite the same thing you're talking about, but I have a really neat rescue story. I found a couple of old floppy disks with the labels scratched off wedged behind my desk back when I was in high school (this was shortly before Windows XP came out, so floppies were becoming pretty unusual). I took them home, dragged out my parent's old Windows 95 computer, booted it up, loaded the first disk and it turns out I had found an old copy of Incredible Machine 2. Bizarre.
Last year i found complete Box&manual ToEE. For 300Kč(/17). I put it next to DUNE, System shock and Dungeon Keeper Gold.
I need to start visiting some more used game stores...if I can find them :(

The best I have is an old strategy guide for Red Faction 1. Got it for .25 a few months ago. Found it in a pile of old MAD Magazines.
I rescued a few copies of freelancer a while back. Not sure if this counts since 1) it's not THAT old a game 2) was a jewel case re-release.
Temple of Elemental Evil for 2 bucks a couple years ago, and Divine Divinity for 5 bucks at around the same time.

I could kick myself for not grabbing this, but I saw an original boxed copy (new) of Planescape:Torment for 8 bucks at - of all places - The Bay, 3 or 4 years ago and decided to pass on it. When I finally came to my senses a few days later and went back, it was gone.
My Original big box Version of System Shock 2 complete with manual in perfect condition was purchased from a Charity shop for 50 cents

My Morrowind Collectors edition was purchased for 5 Pound Sterling on Amazon.co.uk
A month ago I rescued a complete, in box Phantasmagoria in pretty good condition for $3.
I saw MoO 3 in a bargain bin for $4, I left it there.
One time at a book fair I rescued, Rollercoaster Tycoon Gold, Majesty Gold, Fallout 2, Supreme Commander Gold, X-COM: Apocalypse, Homeworld plus Cataclysm and Syndicate Wars, for about 15 USD.

The correct action would have been purchasing it and then filming it's Crucifixion.

(Kind of like the organization that has vowed to purchase and destroy every copy of Shaq Fu, called the worst fighting game in history.)

Thats an impressive haul. I'd sequel like a little girl if I found an original Fallout 2.

Reminds me of the time I saw a copy of MoO 3 for Mac OS X at CPUsed in Toronto back when they were living large at Bathurst and DuPont Street for $5 CDN. I asked on some forums if it was worth picking up. Everyone said it wasn't worth getting, even for free.
I'm rescuing GOGs everyday from the evil clutches of eBay. Usually at $1 a piece :D
