I found a link to this forum topic in some other forum so I went ahead and read it. According to the guys who found it, it should be in all images taken in WOW at default settings and its a mind boggling find.
Here is the link: http://www.ownedcore.com/forums/world-of-warcraft/world-of-warcraft-general/375573-looking-inside-your-screenshots.html

And in other news, due to the release of MoP, everyone gets 7 days of free game time.

Relative to what you posted, they are watermarking screenshots. Is there some point that I don't get?

That means that every screenshot you took and usually post in forums have your account ID, IP address, server and time and date it was taken, usually that is not information you want to provide to everyone viewing your screenshot that beside the obvious privacy and scamming concerns.
Well... Screenshots with quality set to '9'

Server IP address, which isn't really that interesting unless you're playing on an illegal server, since I'm pretty sure Blizzard knows their own servers IP adresses.

Apart from the account ID there's really no personal information in there. Might be useful for looking up alts I guess, if you get lucky to find 2 matching screenshots.

Actually, the screenshots don't have the IP address.

"The secret watermark which is being intentionally embedded inside WoW generated screenshots below top quality, DOES NOT CONTAIN the account password, the IP address of the user or any personal information like name/surname etc."

gyokzoli:
They contain server IP address as I understood.
Also its for all JPG photos with quality 9 or less

Which, again, is only a problem if you play on illegal server. Blizz already have their own server IP addresses.

The problem is not that, the problem is once you share a screenshot you gave anyone who knows how to read the watermark a lot of info you don't usually share with the screenshot. ppl go through effort to hide their character name, guild name and chat when sharing screenshots unless they post for glory

most people don't care.... and what if someone knows the ip address of the server you play on? most people may hide chat, most wow screenshots I have seen have the char name, you can just look them up in the armoury. The only players this is a nuance for is those whom for some reason wants to mask the ip of the server they play on, you can draw your own conclusion why they would do so.

Well for me I would care but I dont play WOW as I never liked their TOS. I thought of sharing the info as I found it interesting.
But I dont know why we are discussing the ip address of the server and ignoring the main big info shared which is account id. And by combining account id with all other info in the watermark, only missing piece of info is password.

funny how the only person who find this interesting is one who do not play wow... just why did you post this? account id, by the way, is useless by itself.

"DOES NOT CONTAIN the account password, the IP address of the user or any personal information like name/surname etc. It does contain the account ID, a timestamp and the IP address of the current realm. "

This is all it contains, and it is no use to anyone.

Funny how you came to the conclusion I am the only one interested in it and seriously if you are not interested in it why do you keep discussing it!

If you believe the information in the watermark is useless and the fact that blizzard is adding a watermark in the first place is not worth knowning then I don't understand why are you discussing it.

from this thread here it seems everyone else participating so far has called it a non-issue... I have no idea what anyone could use the information in the watermark, except blizz can use it to find illegal servers and the id of the player playing there stupid enough to screenshot it. Other then that, I see absolutely no use of the information to anyone else. So far, I have seen no reason for noone else to care about this. As a non-player, I wonder why you do?

Well I certainly don't play WOW so you can say the effect of that on me is zero but the reason I shared this info is same reason I was happy when experts told everyone sharing photos from their cellphones on FB and other sites that hey if GPS is on, people can know exactly where you took that picture. (while i never use FB nor share my photos with strangers)

So to make long story short, I found the topic as I indicated and thought it might be useful for fellow GOGers who play WOW.
