I'm curious to know what people know (or think they know) or associate with Australia and Australian culture.

This is an informal research project to help a prospective author, so any help is appreciated :D

Edit: Seriously though, the only thing I think about Australia is kangaroos and all the killer animals.

But seriously, I lived in Brisbane for 18 months for my post grad; and the one thing that really impacted me is...your internet sucks, especially with that bandwidth cap nonsense. And retail videogames are so expensive that it's cheaper for me to import online from UK.

However, I love that there are so many open spaces around. For a country as big as Australia, it surely feels quite...empty.

Edit: Oh, and thanks to PC Powerplay Australia for introducing me to GOG; They had this promotion where every DVD included in the magazine also contain a code to reedeem a free copy of Jagged Aliance 2: Unfinished Business or Lionheart.

Holy cripes on toast! I thought at least the kangaroos were safe...

As I've been to Australia: Abbos, one tried to frighten my gf on the train station and tried to beg for money but I guess they don't know that you can't ask for it in a frightening manner.

Also I learnt that most Australians don't know about Foster's (at least where I stayed); getting your visa is a pain in the arse; I liked the koalas and your accent; I liked the heat because it's always so cold in my country, I hated your internet speeds

Exceedingly censor-happy. Free facilities. Dangerous animals. Smallest population Nintendo cares about. Animal conservation. Racist youth (words from the newspapers here, not my own).

The short list (or not), in no particular order, of what immediately pops up in my mind when I hear "Australia":

* Barbies (the culinary kind, not the childrens' toys)
* Crocodile Dundee / Paul Hogan
* The Sydney Opera House
* Censorship
* A multitude of cute and/or deadly animals
* Nice and/or deadly scenery
* The Great Barrier Reef
* The outback
* The RFDS
* A number of ambitious low-budget 90's kids sci-fi/fantasy shows
* Australian English, my favourite variant of English besides British/Scottish variants.
* "No worries, mate."
* Being the real-world counterpart to Discworld's Fourecks continent.
* Aboriginals (not sure that's the right term)
* Mad Max

Also, krogans, because of the hilarious reaction of aussie Mass Effect fans to Wreav's comment about wanting to own Australia in return for helping save the Earth: "We welcome our sharktoad cousins. You're welcome to stay as long as you can survive."
