Crosmando: Is there any reason GOG chose the DOS version of Stonekeep? Was the Windows one just incapable of being properly compatible with modern OS?
GOG doesn't have access to source codes, which severly limits the extent to which they can actually work on the games' compatibility. hence we get so many DOS editions, because they're so easy to get to run in DOSBOX. actual Windows editions and emulated Glide support? keep dreaming.

F1ach: I only played LoL III, it was a pretty OK game.
Ever try Wizardry 8?

Wow! I've often heard about Wizardry 8 but I'd never seen it before. That looks really cool. I hope GOG is able to get that one for us.Ever try Wizardry 8?

Stonekeep is very close to Grimrock as it is also realtime while your movement is in grid-steps... also, it has a wonderful atmosphere, further on you get companions (who have really funny comments about the ongoing events) and so on - love this game, it was the first one I bought on GOG four years ago...
Lands of Lore - not so sure, I only heard a praise about it but when I bought and installed it I only played it for about an hour and it didn't grab me at all... plays more like M&M in my opinion...

Well with all the positive feedback I'm now seeing maybe I will give Stonekeep a shot. I've wishlisted most of the games talked about here and will probably wait for sales.

roninnogitsune: Stonekeep is terrible. the game is Tedious, Shallow, Boring, Terrible story with the most bland and Cliche Hero that gaming has ever produced. The difficulty is poor, the best tactic for dealing with enemies is throwing Arrows through doors or spots that the AI bugs out on and fighting in melee will end up having you wounded and forced to backtrack for 30 minutes to an hour to heal up.
Bodkin: Duh! Now you described all dungeon crawlers even Lands od Lore. What stone have stonekeep done to you? Did he touch the wrong parts of ya? No, really ignore him. Fighting is good, you just dont klik on picture of your weapons, but LMB is for your left hand and RMB for your right, so you can have falchion in one, and staff or rock in the other one. The FMV sekvencions are a little funny/campy, but thats the FMV deal.
It's hard as nails, but yeah, there was few bugs so saving more frequently was good idea.
LoL is also ok dungeon. It's more oldschool, with clicking on weapons fictures, beautiful handdrawn everything and some nice ideas.
Betrayal is little bit different. It's open world, so you travel from city to city and fight in turn-based fights and open chests and... it has some really old vector graphics so it looks like old. But it's still quite good.
Return is different, its more Baldurs gate with turnbased fights and a lot of talking.
My dungeons of choice is Realms of Arkania series. Open- world with cities and dungeons and pirates, bandist and hardcore rpg system. The last one, Shadows over Riva, is the best one. One big city with a lot of dungeons. Also turnbased fights.
So i'd say that every of these games is good, but some are better than others for different "tastes".

I appreciate all the opinions given. Based on the mixed reviews I'll probably give this a whirl when it is on sale and see for myself. What the hell? At that point it's only the cost of a cup of coffee I am potentially wasting. It'll probably be fun enough just to see it in any case. That said, it's always very interesting to me to see what people have to say about any game I'm interested in, good or bad or in between.

I just played StoneKeep recently. Very hard for me to separate out nostalgia, but I still found the game to be very enjoyable. Perhaps without having the experience of playing games of this type you would find it to tedious, but I enjoy the slow monotonous pace of going deeper and deeper into an unknown dungeon. :-) The last levels were a bit of a letdown to me, but I still enjoyed the play though.
