hedwards: The issue there was that they were allowing the player to play as the Taliban.

KavazovAngel: And what exactly is the issue here?
The issue was that we were still engaged in combat against the Taliban and it was seen as unpatriotic to allow players to play a game where they're taking potshots at our troops.

I'm not saying I agree, just that it's a pretty significant violation of our culture to go around killing representations of our own troops.

Yea, but people are having fun when they're killing Russians (looking at you MW), and when Americans are dying in games, they start crying and bitching and banning games and what else not.

That's pure bullshit.

EDIT: I understand half of the companies are from the US, but seriously, if Eastern Europeans can be butchered, so should Americans be.

Fuck, man, its just a freaking game, and no freaking real people are dying.

When's the last time we were in an armed conflict with Russia?

It might be silly, but it's far less silly than a lot of the BS censorship that happens in various EU member states. At least this one has little to no impact on public debate.

And, people are still free to create their own mod which turns it back to what it likely would have been prior to the change.

Yea, I agree about this. It is true especially for Germany.

As for what you said with that edit. I doubt that they put much more thought into it than, "we're going to piss off our primary market if we do this" and weren't willing to take the hit. Whereas if they piss off eastern Europe, they've still got western Europe, the US and enough money to make it work, even after accounting for the portion that gets pissed off.

In the US we have little in the way of formal censorship, but shunning and boycotts sting like we do.

You've got a point here. They want to play and stay on the safe side, I guess.
