I know quite a few forums do that, and it doesn't work well. Say I post something about buying Desert Bus, and I say it's pretty good. Then next year some guy buys it and posts in that thread, talking about. It's a lot better than having multiple threads about it just because the forum locks up the thread because it's not responded to.

The way I see it: if the original poster hasn't responded to the thread in six months, they probably don't want to continue that discussion. Equally, receiving replies to comments you made many months ago could be annoying to both OP and those who reply alike.
A new thread started by someone who still has interest in discussing the topic not only makes sense but is much better etiquette. If GOG are worried about too many threads being displayed in each forum they could easily implement a maximum of five pages, masking the excess. But that's up to them.
