Rucksack: Just like "District 9" before it, "Avatar" was a rubbish movie that a got a free pass because it was a flat and overly obvious metaphor for topical events.

I actually liked District 9. It was different and funny. The major problem it had was that it couldn't decide on which type of movie it wanted to be. If it had stuck to one style consistently, it would have been great. Oh, and it made me SO want to play a shooter based on it.

Red_Avatar: It reminds me a lot of Jurassic Park in that respect except JP had tense moments and likely characters even if they were flat as well.

I think JP is a great movie, although it does contain its fair share of cringe-worthy moments. How many others winced at the line "It's a UNIX system! I know this!"? :-D

It's not a well-written movie, but I still thinks it deserves props for being the "Shiniest Movie Ever Made," a title I expect it to hold for at least a year and a half.
Also, it's a lot of fun to make snarky comments at it. Someday, there'll be an awesome MST3K episode about it.
Call me easily amused, but I liked it quite a lot.
It probably has something to do with my suspension of disbelief or "focus"; cutting yourself off from outside information really helps.
Also - the "obvious" message, as usual, went entirely over my head. Africans, Indians ? Really ? My first thought was that the Na'vi are somewhat similar to the Protoss, most of all - because of their trans-personal network that reminds me of the Khala. Also - couldn't help but notice the starcraftesque units (Banshees, anyone ?). Of course - Night Elves were my second thought ;P.
I like to dig deep. The "obvious" analogy wouldn't lead me anywhere - it would be a mental dead end. I don't need that. Therefore - I reject it. It's as pointless as watching the Matrix for the special effects.
Still - I don't watch a lot of movies, or do much of ANYTHING, to be quite honest... But when I do SOMETHING, I do it with passion and a lot dedication. Therefore - it would be REALLY hard to find something that I would be unable to squeeze at least SOME value out of.
Although - the last season of the X-Files is pretty close ;P...
Comparing Avatar to Blade Runner doesn't really help to dispel the idea that you went in with completely impossible expectations.
Everything about the film; the trailers, the hype, the writer-director, the basic concept, the mainstream appeal - all of these things point to it being a big, brash, bombastic popcorn epic. And that's exactly what it is. I'm sure there's a Latin phrase I could throw in here.
Seriously, Blade Runner and Avatar? Is it possible to make a less apt comparison? Those two films are night and day - almost literally, in fact.

Tantrix: That's the joke. It's just another Hollywood movie, only this time criticizing the Iraq war and the general western politics.

nicolaierdk: Oh! And don't forget MMORPG's!

Titanium: De gustibus non est dispuntandum.

And therefore we should discuss the overall quality, putting tastes aside. ;)
Oh, and, yeah, Red, the movie was a waste of time and renderers. ;)

PoSSeSSeDCoW: It's an action movie with an engaging environment and beautiful effects. If you were expecting anything different, it's no wonder you didn't like the movie.
TBQH, from your post it sounds like you went into the movie not wanting to like it.

this.
The story is old. But many movies recycle the same classic stories for a reason, because they're classics.
It's not one of my favorite movies, but as a popcorn cation flic it was masterfully directed and very beautiful.
2d characters and a genre story. Check. Fun to watch. Check. Gonna watch it again? Probably not.
yeah, you definitely have to watch it in 3d. i can imagine it being pretty standard in 2d. it was really fun to watch with the glasses on though, i didn't have to think too much about the actual movie when i was busy being impressed by all the pretty shit.

Oh, that's why the sequel is called BPvatar.

I see what you did there!
The 3D experience was the only reason to see it...period. Aside from that, crap.
Agreed. Avatar is a mediocre movie. There's nothing special about it. I'm not someone who gets impressed by special effects as well. Seeing the fanboys posting "Avatar is number 1" on IMDB is truely LOL.

I thought it was pretty good. Admittedly, a part of my better judgement was mesmerized by the 3D effect, but I did actually like it. James Cameron makes spectacle films (and he is good at it.) I wasn't expecting any substantial depth and I wasn't disappointed. In fact, I was entertained the whole time. Well worth seeing once IMHMFOBBQ.
eh Red is braver then me I won't even watch that PoS ,I mean whats the point of wasting your time on substandard entertainment ,I guess its cool if you just like watching movies or whatever, but then I don't even watch much TV just a few series and if you want to see a awesome movie about the corruption of western society I think men who hate women(the girl with the dragon tattoo) and its two sequels are much better ( no fancy 3d just good acting and script, the books sound pretty awesome too)
I have nothing against allegory but its sad when it has no teeth.

Red_Avatar: a) the story is so predictable and old. They made the Na'vi a blatant mix of Native Americans and Africans. A people in touch with nature talk and act like Indians? Wow, original (!)

Completely agree on that.
People still claiming that it's just an action flick, but I'm sorry, even an action flick needs a minimum of suprising elements. Avatar's story is killing the whole movie imo.
Surely already posted here, but still like this:
