Update:

So I am looking through the various UK job sites for anything that slightly resembles a mechanic/fitter position. The trouble is, I have no idea which city to choose.

My request from the UK dwelling GOGers here:

Describe your town/city for me. Why is it a good area to live in? What are the positive/negative aspects of it?

Will not even think about moving to London because if it's anything like the big city I am living in (Warsaw) in terms of people and places or the general attitude then no thanks. Will move somewhere decently close to a big city, though.

I live in Birmingham. It's not too bad. It's big enough for you to be able to avoid undesirable areas.

My town was declared, by a particular tv show, as the worst place to live in England a while back. It's not quite as dire as such charming title would suggest but I wouldn't recommend moving here.

Dunno about England but I live in Scotland (Fife) and work in Edinburgh, Seems to be a large Polish community in Edinburgh and I work with 4 Polish colleagues. Nicest folk i've worked with TBH.

Well they had a list of stuff they went by and over all we came out looking pretty grim. Crime rates for some things are quite a bit above the average (car theft in particular), we aren't to scenic considering the heavy industry, there are some pretty run down housing/rough areas, education turns out not to be the best and generally the residents aren't too healthy compared to other areas.

Can't say it's inaccurate.

As for around my area Perth (Scotland not Aus) is generally welcoming of Polish nations. There are also a fair amount of garages near by. If you use the Jobcentre plus website do a search within a 30 mile radius, that should show a fair few up.

Less welcoming but still a lot of work for skilled Fitters is Falkirk, its a bit more industrial work usually.

Another thing I would suggest, look up companies like Tyre-Fix, It may not be where your EXP is but the skills are transferable and the work is steady at the moment.

Having said that, unless your in Edinburgh or Glasgow public transport sucks so if thats an issue beware.

If you are planning on driving When I put fuel in my parents car today it was 137.9 pence per litre of diesel thats about 1.45 Euro's off the top of my head. The UK as a whole is a good bit above the EU average for all fuels.

Yeah pretty much, apparently a little more rough around the edges over all than some towns.

I'm right outside Manchester city centre, and if I'm honest, this isn't a bad area. Few idiots, but neighbours are friendly enough, and it's done me for 5 years or so, now.

Lots of public transport access, living costs aren't too bad, employment is.....middling, I suppose. High in some areas, low in others.

Worked with a couple Polish chaps, in IT, and they were grafters. They never mentioned harassment where they lived, so I'd say it's not too bad, unless you end up in a small village full of people who've never moved more than 20 miles from it.... :P

Avoid places like Moss Side, and Gorton, and you should be fine pretty much anywhere in Greater Manchester area.

Can't answer for other cities, but we're a fairly cosmopolitan country, and most of us realise immigration isn't necessarily a bad idea, despite rags like The Sun and The Mail.

Now, if we can only get the border guards to actually do their job to stop the illegal ones, and throw them back into the sea.....

Then observe carefully as it's all eaten up in taxes, more taxes, VAT, which by the way is a tax, and the general costs of the upholding of ones life.

I wouldnt bother you are probably better off where you are

Though to be honest im rather bummed out with the situation so im rather biased, I spent 3 years applying to be a police officer passing 12 phases/tests only to be told that this was the point where usually they WOULD offer me a job but cant as they couldnt afford to that was a year and a half ago and I get the quarterly letter/phonecall saying it will be longer.

They than must have cut the person behind the desk as its now a automated email.

Chances may be slimmer as they are planning to cut the station in the area(Hove where I live) and place everyone about an hours drive away.

I do have a FT job in the meantime albeit its rather untaxing but pays about £1200pm or about £4.60 after taxes for this that and the other including royal shopping trips, some MPs lunch and funding for "the artes"(Was sarcasm obviously)

As for the area I wouldnt recommend Brighton/Hove for a newcomer is its very expensive my 2(supposedly 3) bedroom house is costing us in Hove outskirts £1000 rent a month. I had to endure the shame of moving back home as I couldnt afford to go solo.

Yes its good for nightlife and has a large friendly LGBT following but if I wasnt born here and remotely had any real money I'd be on the first plane out of here.

When im re-settled by parents want to move to somewhere in dereham but would be to quiet for someone of my age imo would be like moving from the urban to the countryside. Though its a very nice friendly area apparently.

I have friends that come from yorkshire who say its very traditional and you probably wouldnt be very welcomed so I wouldnt reccommend it either and Hull is voted one of the worst places to love in the uk lol.

I would avoid london and its outskirts especially croydon(Walking down george street at night is rather daunting) at all costs horrible rough area. Avarage joe it simply isnt worth is though dont get me wrong some parts of london ie the tourist areas are great albeit because your waving the money around but its a horrible congested city at the quiestest of times.

As for prejudice had to rationalise due to different people around but its more we blame the goverment for letting them all in(Its legal afterall for EU people so I cannot persecute anyone for moving country and honestly cant blame 95% of people that have)

Hell I have friends that are russian,czech,french,polish so I consider myself open minded and welcoming of other nationalities.

Its more of the muslim culture its generally heated against but I dont want to go to much into an ethnic discussion.

Forgot to mention two of my friends who have finished uni wanted to stay down here but have to go back home because they cant get the hours down here.
