I found this: Game design 2000 vs 2014

This game has five launch day DLCs so this is hardly surprising.
Maybe the fact this will probably sell well and has had reviews ranging from meh-decent will encourage them to either sod the reboot and make a proper Thief 4 or at least stop trying to pander to the modern day morons stuff like contextual jumping is clearly designed for

haha... I like the name given to this reboot NuThief it implies a basterdization of the original game so it is infact The NuMetal Age designed to appeal to tweens easily impressed by shiny new graphics but with an empty core of gameplay.

Here's another review, it was a good read.

assassin33: Why is NuGarrett wearing a mask and corset and beating people up with a giant metal dildo, is he some sort of sexual deviant now? :P

nadenitza: this made me lol

maybe they wanted to chage his name to Gayyrett :P
Aka Klepto McKills-a-lot
There's a difficulty option called no kill or KO. That alone combined with no HUD information (including focus) ought to bring a decent challenge. There's insane stuff like Iron Man too but that's not for me.

Yep, this custom difficulty thingy is a nice touch, gotta give credit where credit is due.

But if that is pretty much it then the novelty will wear off soon and there is not much value in replaying the game with tweaked settings if the journey is not worth while.

Yeah, that's the core problem. The custom difficulty mechanic offers good stuff but the execution of this stuff dooms it's great concept. In other worlds if the gameplay is meh, the mechanic - as cool as it is, will simply obey the gameplay couse it got nowhere to go, it's tied to the gameplay. If it shaped the gameplay however, that's a different story, don't think that will be the case tho...

Indeed, when the early concept art and screenshots were released for Thief it was deemed to be similar to Dishonored which was in turn inspired by the original Thief games. Although Dishonored is not like the original Thief but it was clear that the developers of the game took cues from it and then added their own elements to serve the narrative of the game they were making. Dishonored was one of the best games of the year it was released and was everything that games should be where the player is always in control and every decision you make has an impact on how the story moves forward with complete freedom of choice in terms of gameplay like Deus Ex.

At the time people said that Thief should not be like Dishonored but in terms of quality and game design Eidos Montreal should have looked towards Arkane Studios ideals. The expectations were high for this game but unfortunately it appears to be an OK game instead of a great one which is less then the pedigree the original series deserves.

That's true but I never expected replayability to be a strong suit for this kind of game in this day and age, it doesn't suit the business model. I believe it came with at least one DLC on release day and no mod support, that says quite a bit too.

According to Steam, there is only 1 DLC for me (the rest are simply items... meaning inventory cheats, i.e. extra arrows, etc.) They can sell those all day long for all I care, I'll never buy them and they aren't content.

Still, launch day DLC (that is content) is an abomination, especially when I've already come across several bugs. If the content was ready at launch, it belongs in the game. DLC is supposed to pad continued development, not the launch sales. (IMHO, at least).

after about 5 hours of playing, its a pretty good game. It certainly has its flaws, but its also fun. Steam is having issues as well (not sure what is Steam and what is the game in terms of the culprit). Achievements are not showing for me, and I can't see the bank map or soundtrack I bought with it.

I'll post more of a review after I get some decent playtime in... still too early to claim one way or the other.
PC Gamer - "There are a couple of dumb boss encounters – better than Deus Ex: Human Revolution, but, yeah. Boss encounters."

What the hell is wrong with this company? Everyone complains about the boss fights in HR, it is universally seen as the worst thing in the game by far, even a deal-breaker for some people.
So they go ahead and put boss fights in Thief? Damn...

Question - Does this feel like a PC game? One of the strong points of HR was that it felt like it was developed for PC, and not just ported from consoles. Does Thief feel similar?

opinionated answer: Yes, it feels like a PC game. The controls are MUCH better than Thief 3. I'm ok with not being able to jump. There is so much mantling and rope arrow play throughout the city, I could see major issues if they let the player jump around.

There are no quicktime events, the loot is hidden well, lots of exploration, etc. Its by no means perfect, I have already been frustrated a few times, and there are poor decisions that are very evident... but its still fun and I don't regret buying it for the PC.
