The game is a derivative pile of shit.

You are not getting a Thief game, hell you are not even getting a fantasy themed version of Dues EX; you are getting a clone of Dishonored that was slapped together in the game development equivalent of a week.
am i the only one who feels like making this game was a mistake
cant help but feel a sense of unease due to past games remakes
hitman and deus ex
good games but had a lot of features that felt forced on the player

any ways i do hope this game turns out good but i will be holding off on buying it
Thief 1 & 2 are my "favorite game" (I think of them singularly).

Thief "4" (reboot) looks like an abomination.

Some of video scenes of looting remind of the the Fight Club IKEA segment. Ugh. (Ugh for the game. It worked for the movie).

It seems that some of Garrett's "special" arrows glow in the dark; but in videos the NPC's never seem to notice the glow even when an arrow is drawn nearby within thier line-of-sight, while they're looking around for whomever is sneaking about. (In T1 & T2 the NPC's certainly notice the glow of, say, the fire arrow.)

Garrett collecting crap to decorate his "mantle" with "trophys"? Very unlike Garrett.

Common English curse words? Those words don't "exist" in the world Garrett lives in.

Garrett's too "touchy-feely" now. He has to run his hands up against everything.

There's just too much wrong with it. Too "gamey".

So I wouldn't be buying it. But I WON'T be buying it regardless - because DRM and not moddable (there's a whole world of great fan missions for the first two Thief games - many very excellent. This one "can't" be moddable - because "3rd party libraries and licenses". It's throw-away trash the way "top" game companies like it - so we can't fall in love with a new game and play it for years with new missions/levels/etc. They want it to be a one-off $60 experience. Count me out.

Maybe when/if it ever hits GOG - if it's still not moddable then it has to be cheap. If it's moddable then it has a bit more value.
Cheers folks.

It might be a waste of money but i hold a little hope for this.

Maybe the back story is that Garret was raised by priests in this new version or he trained with the TSA. :P
I own but have not yet played the Thief series on GOG. I gave the first game a short test run just to check it out a year or so ago and it looked interesting, so I am looking forward to getting around to playing the entire series one of these days when I manage to plough through my backlog enough to get to it. As such I'll most likely look forward to trying out the new game as well. As for whether it is a good game or not I'll have to leave that up to decide when I actually play it eventually as I don't know much about the series other than that it is popular and looks fun. For < $4 I'm willing to find out if it's any good, whether that means I have to wait 6 months post-release, or 3 years, or win it in a giveaway or something doesn't matter to me, I've got 2394872398479234 games to keep me occupied until the right price pops up on one of the sale tracker sites I frequent. :)

Having said that, I do kind of find it irritating how Thief has been advertised available for purchase on Steam and 1000 other retailers for like 4 months for now as if it is a released game, as "Early Access" or whatever and even been on sale several times. In 10 years games will probably be available for purchase online where you just get a simulator that loads up a virtual machine with a code editor in it and can watch the developers programming the game code sold as "Super Gorga Mega Early Access Holy Shit Everything Edition" or whatever, and the game will be bargain bin prices in bundles and whatnot 2 years before it is released. When the game is finally completed and released it will be like $0.25 or so because everyone who was ever going to buy it, bought a copy before the developers had completed 5000 lines of code. Eventually people will just buy games as ideas and the developers wont ever write the games or release anything, just the idea itself will be entertainment value enough to convince someone to spend money. ;o)

Anyhow, despite that ... I'm definitely curious about the game and am sure it'll have some kind of merit worthy of $2 or so at the right time.

Go check out Kickstarter, the end of days is already upon us.

Yes, Kickstarter is probably somewhat of a double edged sword in that regard. It has helped some games to come to fruition which never might have been possible otherwise, and to which have produced excellent games, but it's also produced crap too, or had projects show up and take money and fail miserably.

In the future perhaps they'll have a new site... Kickstopper. :)
I hate the doge meme but just had to share this:

Early review: (not very detailed, but fairly positive).

Even if they don't release modding tools, I wonder how much the intelligent fan community may be able to modify? They mention "blind guards" which is a staple of all 3 games so far, so not a huge surprise. Perhaps that can be tweaked at some point?

I am insanely stoked.

This feels a lot like the last Splinter Cell. Lots of people complaining who haven't played it. But those who play it positively love it. (btw, the last SC, if you haven't played it, is a must play :D)

Are you serious? The last Splinter Cell is nothing like Splinter Cell and that is why people hate it.
I missed the last 2 Splinter Cells, I think. Chaos Theory was my favorite by several orders of magnitude. Double Agent was my least favorite (by a pretty large amount). I never tried anything after that based on DRM, other complaints, and my impressions of Double Agent.

As for Thief... This is the specific video that sums up the game: (touches on non-linearity, stealth, tools, etc) - about 6 minutes long.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=66oVzJQv7DA

Note the interface on some of the gameplay sections. From what I have seen you can choose to overcrowd your screen or go completely empty. Obviously this can tie into difficulty, which some will love. It also sounds like they removed all QTEs, (from the games FAQ) which I find a huge bonus. Not sure where they were but a couple of spots in the videos might be misleading some to assume they will be in the game.

The voice in that video is familiar... kind of reminds me of starting out Half LIfe (doesn't fit the setting... but for an explanation video, I guess it works).
Bit streamlined and accessible, but that's always going to happen in this age doesn't it? I'm just glad the series is revived and rebooted. Beside I've seen too little to make any judgment.

Right. It wasn't any thing like the Splinter Cells. Now, I love Splinter Cell -- the story, the gameplay, etc. But the newer Splinter Cells were quite different than their predecessors while keeping some core elements. I think that's how this Thief is going to go.

So far, I've not met anyone who's played the Splinter Cell Blacklist who has hated it. Instead, it's just a pool of people who refuse to play it b/c it's different. I'm sure some can raise their hand to differ. But what changed in that game were some story elements which provided different gameplay elements. You can still do entire missions without killing a soul. But the controls are a ton tighter, the story elements are far more engrossing and there are multiple ways to complete each mission. Instead of a stealth-only approach, you get the tools of an operative to go in many different ways to get the job done.

Is it different? Very much so. I personally like it more than all the others, but I also love the others. But I also have all the others available to me to play right now (I own all of them on various systems -- PS2, XBOX, XBOX 360 and PC). So when I want that hardcore, clunky controlled, thrilling stealth game, I can still go back to it. But Ubi changed some stuff for the later renditions and that added to the overall game pool. Now I can enjoy the old ones and new ones with different, innovative play styles.

Same with Thief. I have the other Thiefs. I can play them still today. And now I'm excited to see what new they can bring to the table. It might not have all of the best elements of the old games. But I'm okay with that. So long as the overall product works well together and they bring some innovation. We gamers tend to want to see new and exciting ways to play games that build on top of what we are familiar with. I think Thief will fit it from what I've seen.

That said, sometimes innovation sucks. We've seen that a hundred times over. I'm hoping Thief dodges the suck and builds a new idea for what I think is one of the most brilliant IPs to ever grace the market.
