falster: Correct me if im wrong, but is it not just "Thief" ?

stg83: Yes indeed, it is a reboot similar to the recent Tomb Raider. It explains the absence of Steven Russell as it is a new direction, and the game development was probably quite expensive so its not catering only to the niche audience i.e. fans of the original Thief series. It is being released on all the known platforms to reach the widest audience possible which includes people who have never played a Thief game before.
Exactly, hence why i feel all the hate its recieving is slightly unecessary.
Fortunately, since it will probably be Steam only, I won't really find out if it's as horrible as it's shaping up to be either way.

Edit: Not in, good luck to the peeps. And hopefully everything turns out okay.

Not in, as I don't use Steam, but +1 regardless .

hucklebarry: Do you mean the HUD or the game world?
I meant neither nor but the game/gameplay design. That's why I don't believe in the 'success' of the reboot - it will be another modern action game with stealth elements, hello Hitman Absolution, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Tomb Raider, Human Revolution - all ruined series.

WTF: I never played any Thief game in my life. However after excellent Deus Ex HR I'm buying anything from Eidos Montreal team, so of course I preordered months ago.
I never did myself as well but until recently i managed to delve into the beauty that the dark project is. Needles to say it's the best stealth action game i played to this day and it's probably the oldest one and the one that started the genre - loved the missions, the story, the guy that voiced garret captured his character perfectly, loved the gameplay and how you can interact with the environment and freedom of movement (rope arrows, water arrows, moss arrows, ledge muscle ups, surface noises and things like that), loved the dark theme as well.

As for the Thief 4... the voice actor is not the same witch is a major blow. Graphically looks great, gameplay remains to be seen. What will suck is overuse of ingame cutscenes, carbon corridor linearity, press x to jump over, regenerating health and the rest of the modern day bullshit that we call modern but for some reason i think we are going backwards with it...
The reboot answers are correct, but I still think to many, it will be termed T4 just as TDS is still T3. Sorry, but I'm not calling it Thief Reboot :p

I am confused about some of the hostility. The cut-scenes and videos I'm seeing are amazing. They are dripping with ambiance, story, intrigue, and beautiful art. The focus ability... I"m likely turning that off anyway so I don't care if its there or not.

The only unknown in my book is how the gameplay handles. And, of course, surely they understood that the voice of Garrett was sacred! I consider that a blunder, but the new voice isn't terrible... he just will take some getting used to, whereas if they had obtained the one and only, we would all be cheering and not having to worry about the change.

As with T3 (or TDS, whichever you prefer to call it) I think that behind a concession or two, a great game could be hiding in the shadows ;)
I don't know what to think. All signs point to a disappointment, and I wouldn't care half as much if the main protagonist was "Jim the hand" and the game was called "Pickpocket". But alas, I'll just have to bunker down and hope for the best.

A good point. I remember thinking that the reboot would contain a new character based on how T3 ended. I think that may have been ideal, although I can see a lot of folks proclaiming that its not Thief without Garrett. So as you stated, a new title AND new character might have been intriguing.
I'm not in as a) my computer most definitely doesn't meet the minimum requirements and b) Idon't use Steam, but I'm +repping you.

I loved the Thief series, back in the day, having played The Dark Project and The Metal Age to hell and back. I'm more than willing to give this reboot the benefit of the doubt but, honestly, I think they're trying two things that quite simply are doomed to not work in tandem: they're trying to please veteran Thief fans while catering to the requisites of new gamers, as well, and that kind of spells "disaster", for me, as Thief fans will probably feel their "pure Thief" game got corrupted by all these new people that don't "deserve" to play a true Thief title (and all the ultra-protective usual accusations of casual gaming and Master Races and whatnot), while new players will probably have something they're more interested in to play, instead of Thief. This balance is something I think is going to be the hardest thing to get -- not to say they won't be able to do it, I'd be more than happy if they did, just saying it's going to be hard.

Being stuck with this crappy computer for what I deem will still be a long time, all I'll be able to do is watch videos and reviews, but I'm semi-hyped for it, and I hope Eidos Montreal nails it.
I'm sort of expecting gaming's equivalent of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_History_of_King_Lear

(Oh, and not in whatever it is I'm out of.)

hucklebarry: *snip*
I definitely agree that there is a lot of pessimism for this game even though everything we have seen from the game so far looks fantastic. I am really looking forward to this game and although it might seem like blasphemy to some people but the voice actor change does not really bother me because it has become a norm with a lot of franchises like Splinter Cell, Metal Gear Solid and now Thief. Although I don't agree with the game makers that it simply isn't possible to dub the voice over a motion capture performance as a recent example is Hitman Absolution where 47 was still voiced by David Bateson while the game used performance capture as well. Hitman Absolution is another game people like to hate on but I really enjoyed it especially the online contracts and challenges. :)
quick question.

On mobile device at the moment so checking it myself is a bit harder,

Is Thief (4 or reboot or whatever you want to call it) steamworks only or are there non steam reliant(legal) versions going to be available?

As far as I know on PC it will be steam only.

It will be available on Uplay.
Still have a faint glimmer of hope. If the developers can remove the crutches and make it like an actual thief game on the higher difficulty settings then that is something that I could live with.
