You've quick save but I don't know if there are moments after the prologue where you can't save.

There're two specialized difficulty options that affect saving to make it harder, one for Chapter Only (mission or checkpoint?) and Iron Man (you die once, no loading allowed).

Watching the TB WTF on the game, it sounds pretty good if you like stealth (really not a game for those who want to kill kill)
The customizable difficulty looks very interesting....

tarangwydion: A couple of questions. How is the save game system? Do they retain the save game anytime anywhere system or do they switch to checkpoints?

Is it possible to switch to third-person perspective like in TDS?

Do your loot/gold and equipment get reset in the beginning of each mission like in Thief 1 and 2 or do they accumulate like in TDS?
On master difficulty, I am quick-saving all over the place. No different than any of the previous Thief games. You can also manually save in slots so that you can run multiple games on various difficulties/playstyles. There are also checkpoint/auto-saves.

As mentioned, if you customize the difficulty, you can remove those saving options. But, by default, you can save to your heart's content.
You can "jump" only to what is in front of you, try jumping from a ledge or from a balcony to a beam on your left or right, see how many times you quick-load before you nail it or give up entirely... contextual movement has no place in a game like this, what were they thinking? :( Rip skilful platforming...
As an FYI, the mission I just started has 106 pieces of loot to find. That does not count 42 documents or 6 special items (all in this single mission). I'll also post a sort of spoilerish answer to those asking about supernatural elements to Thief. Those that liked a very specific Thief 3 mission might enjoy this. Original? Not so much. Fun? so far, oh yeah.

Got my keys! Now to download this bad boy. Should be ready just in time for the EU release tomorrow.
How long does it normally take for a game to function with all the Steam bells and whistles? As of this post, it doesn't seem to work (other than launch) with the app. No screenshot functionality, cards can't be viewed, achievements can't be viewed, according to my recently played list, I haven't played Thief. For most purposes, it seems Steam still isn't aware of this game.

Is this something to report or is Valve just slow on rolling out game features.
Damn you steam

opened it up and saw Thief "Available Now"

Went to my library thinking i could play it even though I was certain it wasnt released here till tomorrow and lo and behold its still sitting at preload until tomorrow.
I have recently encountered two pet peeves of mine in gaming.

I always try and pick the "wrong" way first. because I want to explore everything. Of course, since I can't read the devs minds, I don't always guess correctly. When they drop you down a shaft and prevent you from going back... that is not cool. To make matters more fun... they also auto-saved on me during the drop, meaning I can't even reload. Grrr... (luckily, this has only happened once so far).

The other thing I can't stand is when they give you an objective to go back to a place you already cleaned out. One of the reasons Morrowind remains one of my favorite games is that you can complete objectives BEFORE you get them. And you can also disable combat music which is another big no-no from Thief 4. Morrowind implemented both of those fixes... TWELVE (12) years ago... why are we still making inferior games today?

I'm fairly sure you could only disable the combat music in Morrowind using a mod or by disabling music altogether

It was MP3's in a folder. If there wasn't a menu option, all you had to do was drag the MP3s out of the combat music folder (and normal music would still work since it had its own folder). I know I didn't have combat music once I figured it out and I didn't use a mod. I'll take your word for it on the options... I'm too distracted with Thief to reinstall Morrowind at the moment ;)

You could even replace the combat mp3s with exploration mp3s and that sort of worked for that effect, but the music still jumped to another track when combat started, which is not ideal (if you dislike combat music for the same reason that I do at any rate, which is clearly framing 'combat' and 'clear' states).

hmmm... now I'm curious... I know I solved that issue somehow by fiddling with the core game. you might be right, though, my memory is fuzzy. at any rate... with all the wonderful thought and options in the Thief game, it seems silly to not allow a simple toggle for that ;)

I do this too, it's very annoying and another reason why auto-saving is stupid especially if they aren't even separate to quick saves (and normal saves).

I agree about the objective thing too.

About the combat music, you could use autokey application or something similar to bind a hotkey to mute the sound. Not a perfect solution but far better than increasing chance of failure due to "dramatic, stress music".

The good news, in this game, is that there are separate saves... I just didn't use them in tandem.. lesson learned... again.
