So I am currently playing Thief: The Dark Project again. While I replayed Thief II like 5 years ago and have replayed Thief 3 several times I don't think I ever replayed the first one.

Anyway, I am in level two and having issues. The main one is that headshots with bow and arrow do not seem to work. I shoot from the shadows on completely unaware enemies and they do not die, though I know I struck them in the head. From there I shoot as many as 7 arrows into them and still they do not die. There are areas of level 2 where the hammerites are facing you in well-lit areas, so I need my arrow-fu to work.

Is there something I am missing?

Some arrows shoot straight and some shoot in an arc....and will not hit where you aim...aim a bit higher or lower next time.

Now I recall.....for arrows that shoot straight aim head with top of bowsight, and for ones that arc aim head in the middle of bowsight. Also they can only shoot so far(ones that arc)

Also make sure to save every so often and not just quicksave, esp. in the Gaul areas.....the sound echos so if a guard hears something and you quicksve and they hit an alarm yer screwed for stealth and will have to reload an earlier save.

Their heads.

... I'm sorry, I couldn't resist.

Yeah, the aiming is tricky. I am seeing a blood splatter when I shoot on their head though. Maybe I am missing just slightly?

Anyway you can confirm that a headshot should always take them down, right?

Yes, but also you MUST not be seen by them, and they must NOT be alerted, even partially. If they say something like "I thought I heard something" or "I thought I seen something" then they are partially alerted to you and looking around and any shots made against them will NOT work until they say stuff like "Oh well, it was just the wind" and go back to their watch/patrol.
In the case of Bafford's guards, at least, the armour at the back of their heads is not just aesthetic... I think Hammers also have neck armour stuff.

Yes but if he hit neck or head armor it would've made a clanging sound.

It looks like a regular hit, it just does less damage.

Nope....it'll make a clang if you hit a guard with a metallic helmet or neck armor on...sheesh man being all crazy telling me I don't know my Thief.

If he hit the head and blood came out but the guard didn't die than the guard doesn't have any metallic head armor, and was alert at the time the arrow hit. I've played often and if the guard is even scanning the room and partially alerted than the arrow won't one shot him.

Which is pretty silly really, since an arrow to the face should kill anyone no matter what.

From ten years ago, I observed the same. I concluded then that it wasn't head, it was neck. Which makes sense, they have a helmet, and when they die, they choke. I'm pretty sure un-noticed neck shots work.

The game can't show duck/dodge animations...So maybe them being alert means the arrow grazes them and you still see the same hit occur because the devs were lazy?

I'll try that. I just finished the level and headshots never worked through the whole thing, even when guards in no way saw me first or were alerted in any way. Unless alerting someone early in the level means everyone thereafter is alerted.

Were you in any light, or close to the guard? That makes it harder too.
wtf are you killing guards for anyway?

Does the difficulty level have any effect on damage?
