orcishgamer: Hey, if you're old enough you'll remember them being called VD (Venereal Disease), I'm sure they'll come up with a better name in another year or two:)

I don't know the rationale really, I do know things that aren't primarily transmitted via sexual activity, but are often transmitted that way, are now included, though.

On the plus side, saying "the clap" still elicits giggles and everyone still knows what you mean.

Coelocanth: Heh, I just saw this thread and the first thing I thought of was "Give it any fancy acronym you want, but I'm old enough that it will always be the clap to me".
Except "clap" is actually just a slang term for chlamydia, not a general term for any STI/STD/VD/Social Disease. So when you come down with a case of gonorrhea it's not applicable and everyone will think you a boorish fool for using the incorrect term.

hedwards: Yeah well, don't forget about STP, although the confusion with STD is probably understandable.

ErekoseDM: stone temple pilots?
Standard Temperature and Pressure?

I never could deal with that acronym for Stone Temple Pilots. It sounded like everyone was suddenly a lot more interested in chemistry than I'd been led to believe.

hedwards: Also, I've been in classes dominated by women and quite frankly, this is completely inappropriate behavior on the part of the professor. I remember sitting through an incredibly tense discussion on gender free language as the only man in class. The last thing that a prof should do when a class is that lopsided is chew somebody out for sticking up for themselves against perceived bias.

rampancy: The problem is that the abuse of "PC-ness" actually ruins legitimate discussions about gender inclusivity and gender equity. I had a similar situation break out in one of my classes where several people (all male) – through no fault of their own – simply didn't fully understand the true importance of understanding gender in the classroom, and as a result felt attacked by others in the class.

I think such discussions are valuable, and there are some cases where being PC is actually very important...but people need to be reasonable about when and where to emphasize the importance of language. Kind of like our discussions about gamer "entitlement".
This is just a complete load of shit. Now, maybe if the ratio was a bit more even, you'd have a point. But when only 3% of a class that large is in that group, I do think that a significant amount of understanding is in order.

Chewing out a student for that is completely unprofessional and the instructor should have been censured over it. An explanation that he wasn't going to use a different term would have been more than sufficient, without demeaning the poor student who is already probably feeling quite alone in class.

IIRC, it's also a fuel additive.

STI - an STD in your eye

Originally, yes. But it came to mean VD in general long ago. At least it did where I come from.

And if I'm talking about myself or someone else having 'the clap', I'm not really that concerned about sounding boorish. :P

You misunderstood me; I actually agree with what you're saying. What I was reflecting on was that incidents like the one that you experienced are sadly counterproductive for the people accusing you, because it actually ruins the opportunity for legitimate discussions about gender issues to arise when they actually are needed (as opposed to self-serving feminists looking for any opportunity to project their hate on any male they see).

Pretty sure it's slang for gonorrhea, Wikipedia agrees.

No one says "the clap" in polite company, you say it with the same type of buds you talk about strippers and pot with.

Somehow, you just made me think of this.
